Point hats and jewelry doesn't exactly scream "official". Sorry.

That stuff was the very essence of power and authority...hundreds of years ago.

Just goes to show how antiquated and out of touch that church really is, huh?

Tall pointy hats = power. How very...phallic.

FWIW, there aren't a lot of rules and hoops to jump through to be a Christian. As I said in my original response on this topic, you're a Christian if you follow Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior.

Protestants (except the fringe groups) believe that baptism is an obedient response to being saved - it does nothing to actually save you. Christians who have been baptized should be wary of any church that says to them "No you haven't really been baptized until you've been baptized by OUR particular church - you must be baptized [again]."

Of course, there will always be discussions about applying Biblical teachings to our lives today, and disagreements - but a Christian is a Christian.

And if Jesus Christ is your Lord, you should seek to know and follow His teachings, right? That's where all of the rules and things come in. I don't go to church because I *must* - I go out of obedience to Him, and because through the church, I can serve others and be served myself.

I will continue to screw up and sin. But that doesn't mean I'm not Christian.

Christianity is a relationship. Religions are what spring up around that relationship.

Again, the only "rule" to being a Christian is having Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior. However, it is helpful for your own growth as a Christian and human being to pray, study the Bible, attend church, and try to live a godly life.

I hope that makes some sense.

<<So Jesus lied when He said that the Holy Spirit would lead the Church into all truth and St. Peter was deluded when he said that the promise of the holy spirit is for all generations.

Okay, got it.>>

Yeah, nevermind the fact that Christianity, against all odds, survived in the Roman Empire, fluorished and then became the dominant force in Europe for centuries.

None of that matters because it wasn't the right kind of Christianity. God was just kidding around and wanted to trick everyone. He's fun that way.

The "point hats" and jewelry aren't what make a Bishop official. If I were to don a mitre and ring and carry a crozier, it wouldn't make me a Bishop. They are signs of the office that makes one an official representative of Jesus Christ in the office of a Bishop.

The same could be said for the alb, cincture, stole and chasuble of a priest as he celebrates Mass in the person of Christ. They are signs of the office of the priesthood.

It's the offices they hold as clergy in Christ's Church. They are all called to teach and celebrate the sacramnets, but a Bishop has a special role in this and the Pope as a unique role in this.

And to answer Mr X's ad hominem issue, it's not the actions of the men in those offices but the teachings they proclaim. Of course, a man who follows the teachings in their entirety does have a lot more credibility, but peccability does not negate infallibility.

cm, I'm not talking about official accessories for the priesthood. What you're failing to acknowledge is that these items don't really signify any official capacity given by God. You BELIEVE they do, but that's not the reality for millions upon millions of people.

As signs of the priesthood, alright, these are their official signs but that's not the same as a sign from God. I wasn't talking about the priesthood or book of Mormon, either. You believe certain things make people official, but there is NOTHING that can really, truly be called official because we're dealing with faith. My comment was it would be nice if there was something truly official from God. It remains to be seen whether or not they're "official". (My belief is that God doesn't care about any of this sort of thing but I don't expect you to say that my beliefs are official.)

Trillions, actually.

Billions who are alive right now.

It certainly should be. They are claiming authority to tell everyone else what it means to be a moral person.

"Do as I say, not as I do" doesn't cut it.

"So Jesus lied when He said that the Holy Spirit would lead the Church into all truth and St. Peter was deluded when he said that the promise of the holy spirit is for all generations."

Yeah, if you have the Holy Ghost, and it can only be with you when your worthy. We believe Peter was an Apostle and therefore an official representative of the Lord. It is the establishment after that where we have a problem.

Oh, btw, I don't think Peter wore a pointy hat. A ring maybe, but that is because there is evidence out there he might have been married.
