Hey X - I think you are being unfairly attacked. You have been pretty dang respectful in this discussion.

***I certainly don't respect Scientology, and think it's pretty obviously a scam dreamed up by some 20th century huckster... yet if I met a Scientologist I could still show him or her respect as a person.***

So, would you be honest with them if they brought up their religion?

The funny thing is, I don't think Scientology (or Mormonism, or Jehovah's Witnesses, or all the rest...) are any better.

They're ALL a scam. Look at how rich and powerful all these religions are.

Take a guess at how they keep hold of their money and power...

The whole damned thing is a scam. It really is.

Look at all the wealth and treasures of Vatican City? You think they want to give that up? Why do you think they fought so hard to cover up their misdeeds?

The others are no different.

Wow. That feels kind of out of left field considering all we've talked about...

But, anyway...thanks.

And I do appreciate that you feel I've been respectful. I really and truly hope that I HAVE been (while still trying to give my opinion honestly).

X - you might want to take a deep breath before posting more this morning. You're starting to lose that respect I just mentioned, especially in post 252.

<<It's one thing to say "I don't believe that. It doesn't make sense to me. Here's why..." and another to say "I don't believe that. And you're an idiot if you do.">>

<What if you consider the belief to be idiotic? What then?>

One can still be respectful. Really.

<If I told you the moon was made of marshmallows and cockroaches were the smartest, most spiritual beings on the planet, would you respectfully say "I understand how you feel"?>

I could say "I don't believe that. It doesn't make sense to me. Here's why..." Like I said before.

<What is the point in showing respect for something you consider silly and ridiculous?>

What's the point in manners in general?

The Chinese ambassador to Saudi Arabia may think Islam is a bunch of bunk. He might make fun of the whole "72 virgins" thing with his Chinese friends.

But when on a diplomatic mission to Saudi Arabia, should he tell his counterpart "The whole 72 virgins thing is laughable. I was making fun of it with my pals just the other day. How can you believe something so ridiculous?" I would submit that he should not.

<And no, I'm not showing disrespect for the PERSON. I really am not. I consider Josh and CMPaley to be a couple of the coolest, smartest, and most interesting posters on LaughingPlace (and it's sad that the two of them will probably never see eye to eye because of their stubborn attention to useless dogma).

I also think the stuff they believe in is utter and complete fantasy.

Yes, I do feel it's idiotic to take such notions to such an extreme. I'm sorry, but I do feel that way.>

Fine. It's how you EXPRESS that that makes the difference. That's all I'm saying.

<In a way, I feel like both of them are missing the boat in terms of living a complete life HERE ON EARTH rather than dedicating all their higher brain functions to trying to figure out some mystical magical being and what he might or might not want from us.

It's a waste of time, frankly.>

Okay. And they may believe that you are going to miss the boat on the afterlife, which is going to last a lot longer than our life here. You may totally disagree with that. Fine. But would it not be rude and disrespectful for someone to say to you "You're going to burn in hell, X, and anything you do here on earth is going to be inconsequential compared to that. Happy burning!" They may believe that. But isn't it terrible manners to say so to you IN THAT WAY? I would say yes. Perhaps it wouldn't be in another way; they could express concern for your immortal soul (as they saw it) and then you could either accept that or not, and everyone could still be friends. But when manners disappear, friendship between people of differing beliefs becomes more difficult. And that's true on the individual AND macro levels.

Sure. I'd tell them I didn't believe in it, and why. But it's HOW I would do so that would matter.

X, Dude, i've liked posting with you. Please don't start fighting back when you are being unfairly attacked, it will get you nowhere. Post 258 is just asking for trouble. You are better than that.

That has already been said to me and others on LaughingPlace.

I don't consider it rude or disrespectful. Just delusional.
