<I think he's being attacked for making blunt statements against people's beliefs, and for stating his beliefs as facts.>

Josh, do you really believe that standing up for manners (such as my #255 or SPP's #262, which I though was well stated) to be "attacks?" Or were you referring to something else?

Dabob, maybe "attack" wasn't the right word.

I preach manners on this site all the time!

I think Mr X had been polite throughout the thread, until people started telling him he wasn't.

***If you believe my religion is a money-making scam, please give me some evidence as to why.***

Dude, you are choosing to take this personally. I have not said that the Mormon thing is any more or less a moneymaker than any of the others.

You want evidence?

Just look at those big, fancy elaborate temples. (or churches, or synagogues, etc, etc...)

Just think about how much money your "prophets" (or your head rabbi's, or your arch-bishops) make on a yearly basis.

Just consider how much cash a new recruit is worth to your group.

And, again, this can be said of ANY of the religions so I don't really see why you are being so personal on this particular issue.

And before you bring up the charity thing, I'll just mention that MOST mega-corporations (yes even the * bad * ones like R.J. Tobacco and Busch alcoholics corp...) contribute lots to charity. It's part of the game. ;)

"Dude, you are choosing to take this personally."

Please see, from my post 241:

"As has been said ad nauseum, people's religious beliefs are very, very personal. For some, it doesn't get any more personal. When you've been asked over and over and over again to back off, to tone it done some (jonvn, anyone?) and the response it to pour it on even more or say "but that's what I truly believe", it is seen as a complete lack of respect for the other person's views and the person themselves, due to the personal nature of the issue."

You have given no evidence that my church is a money-making scam.

Temples: We build temples to honor God the best we can. They are for worship and for preparing to return to live with God.

How does having a beautiful Temple = money making scam?

Leaders: The VAST majority of the leadership in the LDS church is volunteer. Bishops, Area presidents, etc, make no money. Only some of the full-time apostles and prophets are supported by the church. And trust me, they aren't raking in the dough and living in the lap of luxury and excess. They spend their whole life in service.

I stand up for my church wherever I am, X-san, so this is a personal issue.

ONCE AGAIN, I didn't single out your group whatsoever. I'm speaking of the entire industry.

However, as far as this statement I'll just say two things.

1) you don't know that. you have no idea what their lifestyle is like. and

2) people say the same thing about the pope.

the POPE.

The dude flies around in the CONCORDE for pete's sake (or he used to anyway before it went out of service).

Lap of luxury personified. And I'm sure it is similar for the leaders of ANY of the big moneymaker religions.

As far as the big beautiful temples, churches, synagogues, etc., to "glorify god", I don't buy that crap for a second.

I'm quite sure god would be happier with people hanging out in the big beautiful outdoors that HE supposedly created, glorifying him through words.

What the heck does GOD care about some big, expensive, elaborate buildings?

You seem unusually defensive so I really have to ask this question Josh...

Is it true that one of the requirements for a temple recommend is that you contribute ten percent of your income?

(I really don't know if it's true or not, I'm sincerely asking the question here...I know that tithing is necessary or at least encouraged in many churches but as far as I know none of that comes attached to any sort of extreme consequences so that's why I'm asking...)

I can answer that one for you, Mr. X.

The answer is yes.

My word, X banned, and people getting personal. You guys are very unchristian. He is simply showing free will. And just as many of you may feel sorry for the heathen natives, or the followers of Ra, Imhotep, Zeus et al, as far as I am concerned, Christ is in the same league.
