<<But I believe tithing supports the organization infinitely more than it used for charity. Just like revenues of a business are used much more to support the business than support their charitable causes.>>

Agreed. I can say that's very true for our church. We put a lot of money into the church to make sure that its cleaned, the electricity is paid, priests are fed (although this church, unlike another I used to belong to doesn't feed the priests like kings) and so on. So yeah, most of the money goes to the organization.

And you should know, Dwarf, that tithing in the Mormon church does go back into the organization. In addition to the 10%, they also ask for other offerings to help support other things, like missionary work and the poor.

So the requirement to get into the temple is just the money to support the church, not any charitable contributions to help others.

Yes, yes of course. I was trying to play nice.

Interesting business model. It's kind of like becoming a patron of a museum. You help build it, you make ongoing donations, and you are free to attend anytime you want. I guess it only works though if you have something inside your museum people are willing to pay a lot of money to experience.

Like you, I stopped my patronage.

1. I didn't mean for Mr X to get banned. If it's because of my post, I'm sorry.

2. It's one thing to say that you don't believe something but to attack it as a fairy tale is a little over the line.

I disagree with Mormonism on a lot, but do I insult that religion? No, I simply state what the Catholic Church teaches and the reasons I believe it.

3. Mr X is an avowed atheist. The Bible says that is a foolish thing...twice. I pointed out that I could "go there," but I choose not to because it's not polite.

Okay? So, Mr X, I'm sorry if I got you banned. I didn't mean to and made no communication with ADMINs toward that end.

***Mr X is an avowed atheist.***

Actually no, I'm not.

***I didn't mean to and made no communication with ADMINs toward that end.***

Thanks for letting me know. It was just a guess on my part based on the timing and how upset you sounded in that one post.

The only difference between religious books containing fantastical tales and regular fairy tale books containing fantastical takes is the fact that it's labeled "a religion".

It's not so much an attack as you might think. There is simply no other way to describe a book that includes stories about the dead coming back to life, virgin births, men living hundreds of years, talking animals, oceans magically parting, etc...

Seriously, if it were not "the bible" per se, how would you describe such a book?

It all depends on the context. If it was written to be a children's story, then it's obviously a fairy tale. If it was written as a religious text, then it should be respected as such, even if you don't agree with it.

I won't trash another's beliefs to their face because, as a Christian, I'm called to be a witness of Christ on earth. That means that I am supposed to act as Jesus did. Did He chew some people out? Absolutely, but the difference is, He didn't attack the Romans, He reprimanded the religious leaders of the religion HE belong(s) to, Judaism. In fact, He said to listen to them (the Pharisees) but not to act like them.

Sound familiar?

Now, I disagree with other religions on a lot of things and I have no problem discussing them, but not in a way that is insulting because that only pushes people away. I won't tell a Jehovah's Witness that they are heretics because they don't believe in the diety of Christ and the Most Holy Trinity, but I will point out what I believe, as a Catholic, and why. See the difference?
