>>The Nicene Creed is a creed that was written by some of the early Christians in order to deal with a controversy about the divinity of Christ. It is an expansion of the Apostles' Creed.<<

I'll repeat what I said earlier:

>>Those of us on LP shouldn't be able to create a criteria and then say anyone who doesn't fit it isn't a true Disneyland fan. Same thing goes for the label of Christian.<<

If someone believes that Jesus was divine and believes in the same *historical* Jesus, they have every right to take on the label of "Christian." (I say historical Jesus because you'll often hear people say that others believe in a "different" Jesus. This is absurd; they don't believe in Jesus Martinez, truck driver from Mexico City. They believe in Jesus of Nazareth, son of Mary and Joseph, etc.)

It's just sheer arrogance of some religions to try and deny them that right based on theological differences.

<<We don't have crosses in our church for two reasons. First, because we believe in not worshiping idols. Second, because we prefer to think of him strong and resurected, not weak and dead.>>

Here's a quote from an LDS website: "When we see a cross, we immediately think of pain and suffering. Latter-day Saints choose to concentrate on the joy that came after. Thus, we choose to decorate with pictures of Christ, rather than symbols of the implement of His death."

http://lds.families.com/blog/g...-crosses

This is a fundamental difference. Christians believe the cross was more than an "implement of death" and I think many would be offended by that description. The cross is where he atoned for the sins of mankind (according to christianity) and it is a symbol of what he did to save you and me. Christians look at the cross and are reminded of what christ went through and what pains he suffered because of their weaknesses.

According to your point of view, the cross was simply a murder weapon.

Early Christian scriptures demonstrate the respect they had for the cross, which you now denigrate.

See Philippians 3:18, Colossians 2:14, Galatians 6:14 and Galatians 2:19.

And by the way, at what does the LDS church believe the original church of Christ fell into apostasy? Pretty early on wasn't it? Was it before or after Paul went across the Roman empire setting up churches that venerated the cross as he did?

Well, about that Nicene creed...what if someone believes in god and his son Jesus, but not the holy ghost?

Wouldn't that person be a Christian by definition, even though not in agreement with that creed?

(never really did understand that holy ghost part, but whatever)

^"at what POINT..."

After Paul went to Rome and set up churches. Tell me where Paul venerated the cross. Veneration of the cross is to us a manifestation of early apostasy that occured when all the Apostles were killed (or in John's case banished). Acts and Romans is replete with examples of how the early church was constantly deviating from the path Paul had shown them. Our belief is that when the Apostles were taken out and there was no one to show them the way they deviated soo much that they could no longer call themselves the true Church of Jesus Christ.

"See Philippians 3:18, Colossians 2:14, Galatians 6:14 and Galatians 2:19. "

None of these scriptures tell us to worship the cross. They tell us to remember what Jesus did for us on the cross and to praise him (some say weep) for saving us from our sins. Paul wants us to take the crucifiction into our lives in that we acknoweledge Jesus Christ's great intecessory on our behalf, which he sealed with his blood. No where does it say raise a cross in your church, put it around your neck, and it definately doesn't say worship it. The cross was merely a tool to Jesus Christ. He didn't have to die, he chose to die, he did it because he knew it was the only way to save us and complete the atonement. He is God, he could of lived in his mortal body forever if he wanted to.

I don't believe that people "worship the cross", it's just a recognizable symbol for people to remember Jesus or more specifically what he went through.

That's no more a "false idol" to me than if you had a picture with the word "Jesus" on it, and you prayed to that.
