Catholics don't worship crosses or statues or paintings. Those are there to remind us of those things, places and people they represent. They're also there to help us focus on what they represent. Even when a person kneels before a crucifix (or kisses it on Good Friday) or a statue of Our Lady, we aren't worshiping the image, we are using them to help focus our minds on what the image represents, nothing more. I would think that any Catholic with a minimal amount of instruction would know that a crucifix can do little for you but the Person who is represented on that crucifix is God and He can do a great deal for you.

By the way, if God was absolutely against images, then why did He command, twice, that statues be made and placed in the holy of holies? Also, why did He command that an image of a brazen serpent be made and that people look upon it to be saved?

Hint: He's not against images, He's against worshiping those images or making those images into gods.

Point to Mr X! We are in agreement on the images thing.

***He's not against images***

How do you know?

Did you ask him or something?

<===once again stunned at the brazen ability for people (and I'm certainly not singling out CM) to think they know so very much about god, if there even is such a thing!

I remember a youth minister in our church in high school making the point that if Jesus had lived in the 20th century, we might be wearing electric chairs around our necks today.

<<I don't believe that people "worship the cross", it's just a recognizable symbol for people to remember Jesus or more specifically what he went through.

That's no more a "false idol" to me than if you had a picture with the word "Jesus" on it, and you prayed to that.>>

Amen.

What I have never understood is why Mormoms are so afraid of crosses. It has been the quintessential Christian emblem for 2,000 years. And here you come along 1,830 years after the fact and make comments like you have made above.

Do you really believe that Christians have been worshipping an execution device for the last 2,000 years because they are secretly happy that Jesus was slaughtered? No, it is a reminder that Christ died for his followers and suffered for them. That's it.

But that's something that repeatedly and deliberately gets lost on Mormons. You claim to be Christians but can't grasp this. I just don't get it.

The LDS church has no problem with being viewed as different. We proclaim our differences all the time.

We also proclaim the similarities.

What's the big problem?

Well, there is something to be grateful for. I am not that adamament against cross usage but I am not convienced to do it myself either. You remember Jesus Christ the way you want and I will remember the way I want to.

I think a lot of non-religious people refer to themselves as Christian because they celebrate Christmas and maybe just don't know what else to say. They believe in God but don't really worship. If someone wants to be called a Christian, I will respect their wishes w/o judgment but I might judge how "good" of a Christian are by their behavior. ;-)

All kidding aside, just like I'll refer to a transgendered person as they wish, I will call someone a Christian if that is what they prefer to be called.

" They believe in God but don't really worship."

You would be interested in the latest polling by the Pew Forum that says 12.1% of the US find themselves as "nothing in particular (see under unaffiliated)," so in other words they believe in something but nothing that is categorical. Also interesting is they now added the category of "other christian," those that believe in Christ but don't follow any of the known christian churches.

Even more facinating to me is the comparisons. Unfortunately, compared to other churches Mormons only differ in that we have larger than average family sizes and tend to concentrate in the West of the US. What was facinating is if you look at the Hindu and Jewish higher education stats they are both up there and it looks like it pays off too, because in both cases over 40% of surveyed Hindus and Jews make over $100k.
