"Disney's not done until the sight of product du jour causes a little throw-up in the back of your mouth."

You mean like what happens everytime I hear the words magic, dreams or wishes when I'm at one of the parks? Oh, and add princess or pirate to that list as well!

>The best CEO for Disney would be one who can recognize these folks and let them have at it, rather than force his own initiatives on his divisions.<

I think there's growing evidence that Iger may just turn out to be the good type of CEO. We'll see.

>Disney's not done until the sight of product du jour causes a little throw-up in the back of your mouth.<

I agree that Eisner really blew it with overkill - the Millionaire thing was just about as stupid as the introduction of New Coke. But I don't think Iger's cut from the same cloth. And I'm hoping that with his leadership and good creative input from the likes of John Lasseter, we may be getting back the company that we once loved. We'll see.

My 2 cents' worth:
- Adding the dolls, not a big deal, so long as they're mixed in with the other dolls.
- Messing with the song, a big, BIG mistake.

As for fan reaction, I suspect there are going to be a lot of people who will be vaguely dissatisfied with the changes, but won't be able to clearly articulate why. These people won't storm City Hall, and they won't write letters, and they won't show up in guest surveys, but they won't be happy, either.

This thing could be a lot worse. The attraction could be sponsored by Starbucks with little Starbucks logos scattered throughout representing all the coffee shops it has around the globe. The dolls could hold little logo emblazoned paper cups representing their favorite drinks. Cute!

<<danyoung: Do I think that current Disney executives sat down in a bunker, rubbed their hands together, and said "let's come up with a way to sell more plush. I know - let's put some crappy Disney characters into the refurbing sw - that'll bring in a pile of dough!"? Of course not. As I said before, my theory is that at some point during refurb planning, it was discussed at the imagineering level the addition of some new characters. Now, it would make no sense to just add in more dolls, as they wouldn't be different enough from what's there to be distinguishable. But taking classic Disney characters, theming them to the Mary Blair look, and putting them in appropriate settings would be a huge plus. And then the marketing department gets involved and says "hey, win win - we can sell the crap out of those new plushes!" >>

Well, your second example is probably somewhat accurate, but with a few missing pieces. You are forgetting ht e HK version and it's inclusion of the Disney characters. In that case, they probably felt that as they were expanding the Small World attraction to include new areas, that they needed some additional new dolls to fill the space. THAT'S when someone threw out the idea of adding Disney characters. For the HK version, probably no one gave it a second thought. I don't know if they even had anyone on the team that had any real connection to the original attraction. They probably just pulled plans from the original and expanded on them.

As for the inclusion in the DL version, THAT'S indicates that the Imagineers have no real affinity for the original attraction. While the attraction did need a rehab, and adding additional elements would help enhance the ride, there were numerous ways they could have done that without muddying the attraction with Disney Branded Characters.

But, your overall second example is only a circuitous route to get to the first. Though it's certain that they didn't use "crappy" when referring to the Disney characters. But, there is a good chance that someone said something like "We've already developed IASW Disney characters for HK, why don't we put them into Disneyland's too? " Now, if this decision was made at the Rasulo level, I have no doubt that the response was "Sure, why not?" as I doubt that there are any of the remaining REAL creative Imagineers that get to be involved at that level or get the opportunity to object.

Another Friday, another reminder from Disney:

http://www.time.com/time/world...,00.html

>>The additions, when first proposed, inspired a small but fierce cry of sacrilege in the Disney blogosphere. "Everybody is so precious about what we do," Lanzisero objects. "At Disneyland, just a few hours into opening, [Walt Disney] started redoing things. It's no fun just to do the same thing all the time."<<

The theme this week is "whiny Imagineers." Jim Hill got the memo, although the primary focus of this article is Toy Story Mania:

http://jimhillmedia.com/blogs/...ers.aspx

This has an overpowering fragrance of flame-bait, and I urge my fellow foamers to abstain from responding to this silliness, as will I. But I must say I am offended that LP wasn't one of the sites that got a shoutout:

>>" ... we're tired of the constant bitchfest. The foamers who post on MiceChat, WDWMagic and your site. They never seem to like anything that WDI does anymore.<<

Nope. Waaaaaay too easy.
