To put this into perspective, at the age of 12, Brooke Shields actually went topless in a movie.

Nowadays people would flip out if a 12 year old went topless in a movie....

"Okay. So perhaps Jodie Foster is 'level-headed.' I stand corrected. She's the one out of 750 child stars who 'survived' the industry."

Yeah its so sad when child stars flame out as spectacularly as Ron Howard did. What a pity. Seriously though, From what I heard Billy Ray didn't want Miley to be in show business, but from growing up around the industry, and having Dolly as god-mother/role model/ coach it was something she really wanted to do. There is a big differance in "putting your kids to work" and "allowing your kids to work". But that has little to do with the pressures of being a Disney child star. Which I do believe is more difficult than being a regular child star.

Are you saying that was okay, WK99?

Of course it's NOT OKAY for a 12 year old, or ANY girl (under age 18) to be topless in a movie (I know, I guess if it's a baby).

<I definitely thought that Billy Ray was pimping out his daughter at first, but after seeing Miley in concert, there is genuine talent there and you can see she loves what she's doing.>

See the tug of war in your statement? It seems like you're trying to justify Miley Cyrus' place in the industry.

Maybe Myley does love what she's doing. Maybe she loves all the attention. She's got a group of people surrounding her and answering her every whim. Maybe she feels pressure to keep all those people gainfully employed. But she's 15. Should she really be making these kinds of decisions at 15?

I don't think so.

My 13-year old has aspirations of being an actor and singer. And good for her. She can enjoy singing and acting now, and be in the drama club in High School, and study theater in college, and when she's 18 and wants to pursue that dream she can do that. But even when we were in L.A. her mother and I would have never started driving her around to auditions and so forth. No way.

In fact, when our daughter was a baby, we were approached by a talent agency. They thought darling daughter was cute, and perfect for commercials. My wife thought about it and said 'no, thanks.'

You know what the agents said? 'Oh good. This business is such a mess, and you guys seem like really nice people.' That was from a talent agent.

My wife and I know the entertainment industry. It's a business that is hard enough and damaging enough for adults. I'd never let my child get involved in the 'the biz.'

We do participate in our local community theater, and it's an enjoyable family activity for us. But that's all volunteer and fun. We're not making a living. Or making our daughter make a living.

Oh, and your thoughts are interesting, Jim. So I'm picturing every TV show and movie that has a child role being played by adults. Maybe those on the more petite side!! ;)

To do away with child actors COMPLETELY would certainly change the entertainment industry in a HUGE way.

>>There is a big differance in "putting your kids to work" and "allowing your kids to work".<<

Except children aren't always best equipped to make their own decisions. We don't "allow" our children to drive cars 'til their 16, or get married, etc. I'm not sure how this is much different.

BTW, semi-on topic. I was shocked to read about the life of Bobby Driscoll. Talk about a sad, depressing ending. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/B...Driscoll

People told me constantly that my daughter should be a model as a baby.

I agree with you Jim, I was like, "NO WAY!" I don't want that for my kids.

My daughter went through the stage where she wanted to be a rock star, now at age 10 she wants to do habitat restoration.

I never said it was OK, I just put it out there, what Brooke Shields did was go fully topless, what Miley Cyrus did was show us her back...nothing sexual about it at all...
