So, it looks like I'll be spending a day at HKDL in July! My sister is travelling there for business, and asked me along. I think we're spending about 6 days in Hong Kong and one at the park. Sooooo ... what are the restaurants like? My problem is that I don't like Chinese food! If I've got no other real options I'll eat it (but only vegetarian things) but I'd rather eat elsewhere if I've got the option. I don't think we're staying at either of the hotels, but would happily go there for one of our meals if that's the better choice for us. Thanks!

The food will be fine. I'm pretty much the same as you, I really don't eat much of anything that's even remotely interesting to most people. When we went to mainland China, I basically just had white rice for 3 days.

We had lunch at the Royal Banquet Hall in Fantasyland, and didn't run into anything too scary. They all had strange names, but they looked pretty safe. I had something that looked like a Sailsbury steak, and tasted quite similar. They have pictures of everything, so you know what you're getting ahead of time. You can also just look at what they have sitting out, if all else fails. I believe one of the places in Tomorrowland that has burgers (assuming you're only vegetarian when it comes to Chinese food), but with rice and stuff instead of fries.

The city of Hong Kong in general is quite westernized, and I'm sure you will find plenty of things that you like. We found a couple great Italian and Irish places near our hotel in Kowloon, but I'm sure you can find things like that all over. If you do feel like getting a little adventurous, I would recommend trying dim sum, as it's basically just steamed dumplings. Pretty non-scary, and very tasty (even makes you feel like you actually had some local food too!).

Have a great time!

I'm glad to hear you are spending most of your time in Hong Kong proper, it's an AMAZING city (I wish I had six days to spend there!).

One day is definitely enough for HKDL imo.

LB, if I were you I'd ask this same question in the Tokyo section with an "attn Leemac" attached (I'm pretty sure he checks in there frequently).

He's a vegetarian and has been to HKDL many times.

Thanks heaps Ferret! Yep, I'm only vegetarian when it comes to Chinese food. The Royal Banquet Hall sounds good, and so do the burgers! (I am soooo sophisticated).

Thanks X, I'm really excited! I only decided last night I could feasibly do it and have just started planning.

Oops, didn't mean to hit submit there (where's that edit button??) Anyway, I'll see how I go here with responses and if I still need help I'll definitely head over to the Tokyo section and see what I can find out! Thanks again :)

Yes, Lee might chime in here as well (thought it's easier since you're only a veggie for Chinese food anyway).

Question...have you been to China before?

I ask because I would recommend at least trying the food once while in country, as the Chinese food you've had in America is probably a lot different and almost certainly not as good.

I gotta say, for example, Japanese food in America is pretty much gross but it is AWESOME here in Japan (er, duh). So it might be worth it for you to maybe sample a thing or two local while in Hong Kong. It was really, REALLY awesome when I tried it there (Disney and elsewhere). :)

Nope, no China before - Singapore when I was 8 is the only exposure to Asia I've had!

My real problem with Chinese food is tht I don't have very exotic tastes. So while it's true that I'm only 'strictly' vegetarian for Chinese food, I don't eat chicken, pork, any type of seafood and so on - which limits the types of Chinese food I can eat. I'll definitely try at least spring rolls (which I eat here anyway) and we'll see how brave I'm feeling regarding anything else!

From my understanding Hong Kong Disneyland has plenty of western choices for a park of this size in China. Althrough compare to other parks the menu is more targeted towards one group of visitors. You may like to also venture out the park and visit one of the Hotel Restaurants, like Chef Mickey at the Hollywood Hotel which includes a buffet that is half Chinese and half western.

Liberty Belle I have intentions of taking pictures if I have time of all the menu's that are available at the park, so will hopely be able to share tham with you on here before you go in July.
