<<1. While I'm sure the Toyota Prius is a practical and helpful for the environment>>

VW is introducing its next generation of diesel engines to the US this fall. These vehicles get better mileage than the Prius.

As fuel continues to rise I think that we will see more diesel cars in the US. Saturn is now selling the Opel Astra. It currently only offers the gasoline version (not terribly fuel thrifty). In Europe the diesel versions get as high as 60 mpg. I wouldn't be surpised to see diesel versions of the Astra and the Ford Focus in the US within a year or two, especially if fuel reaches $6-7 per gallon, which is highly probable.

I did a search for hybrid cars a few days ago and quite a few diesel cars were shown, so you are right, fkurucz.

I just thought I'd share with you how accute the concern for the environment is within the State of California Department of Transportation.

Here's an excerpt from an official e-mail I recieved this morning:

"EPA has updated and re-released the Whole Effluent Toxicity (WET) training videos and manuals. The fresh water series, focusing on Ceriodaphnia and Fathead Minnows, is now available. These videos, originally produced in 1988, have been updated to incorporate the 2002 WET test methods technical updates."

We can't design a freeway without taking into consideration the effects it will have upon a water flea.

Your tax dollars at work, ladies and gentlemen.

I go to classes every week on how to produce the most environmentally sensitive designs. Arnie insists that I do so. Most of the classes are very worth while, and I'm becoming a green expert, but when I get a memo about saving the water flea, reproducing a memo from 1988, I want to puke.
All times are Pacific Time (US)
