This information was mentioned in the latest issue of Westways Magazine, published by the SoCal AAA.

It is a study called "dust to dust" and analyzes the cost to the environment of automobiles. I can't easily copy and paste, so I ask that you look at the links, please.

This small excerpt is taken from near the end of the page titled "Hidden cost of driving a Prius."

>>>The Prius registered an energy cost average of $3.25 per mile driven over its expected lifespan of 100,000 miles... Ironically, a Hummer...did much better, with an energy cost average of $1.95 over its expected lifespan of 300,000 miles.<<<

You could be the only guy I've heard about who actually reads Westways as opposed to throwing it away right after it comes in the mail.

Seriously though, I've often suspected something like this. The stuff that goes into making those batteries is not pretty, and when you factor in the cost of replacing them as opposed to getting rid of the car, holy cow.

But one question. They talk about good casrs for senior citizens. How many people over say, 65, are going to buy a Hummer and then drive it enough to put 300,000 miles on it? The reality of that kind of takes away from the small Hummer figure, doesn't it?

VW is bringing diesels back to the US. Apparently they will have better mpgs than the Prius.

i love westways! I read the article friendofdd mentioned with interest. I found it interesting and I think it has merit. However, in general I don't like their car reviews, mostly because "thrill factor" doesn't enter into my decision on which car to get.

The problem with diesels these days is the price of diesel! Arround here, a few weeks ago when 87 was 3.80 diesel was already 4.20, that cuts a big chunk out of your fuel efficiency ratings! Now that 87 is 4.05 I hate to think what diesel is.

$4.35 at rotton robbies - $4.89 at Valero! I don't fill up mine - would rather not carry all that extra fuel (44 gal tank) I am guessing my next trip to DL might be around $300 driving - last trip in Jan it was only $150!!

Yes they do. I test drove a Prius last year, and loved the sound of it. But as a big guy, there was not a lot of cockpit space, the kids did not have much room in the back, and it did not hold the road well in the wind. I managed to get 29MPG out of the 3 hour test drive in different conditions.

My Skoda Superb is a 2.5 turbo diesel VW/Audi engine and transmission. I have a heavy foot (regularly do 90MPH) and get 38 MPG. And my carbon emissions overall are not much more.

My conclusion was the Prius is ok if you are mainly a city driver and do short distances. But it you do lots of mixed mileage, you are better with a Diesel and the 3 best manufacturers for diesels are VW/Audi/Skoda/SEAT, Mercedes and Honda.

Well the Hondas are too small, and the Mercedes too expensive, so we drive the VW group cars (have had 4 - an economy, a station wagon, a luxury sadan and a soccermom 7 seater). They are cheap to run and maintain, good on the road prices, lots of gadgets, as Sarah's write off last year can attest - very safe, and environmentally friendly.

The Prius was dissapointing to me.

<< and it did not hold the road well in the wind>>

I have never found Toyotas to be good handling cars. I had a 2002 Corolla and its handling was simply appalling. I traded it because I didn't feel safe driving it.

<<The Prius was dissapointing to me.>>

Well, it is a Toyota. The only thing they have going for them is that they last forever, which is why Americans love them (I don't). I am planning on getting a VW diesel within the next year.
