I do not understand when people are saying that the replacement ride for the Peoplemover / Rocket Rods has to have enclosed vehicles. I have heard that this is because there is concern someone might spit / throw something from the cars. I don't buy this. People could do this from lots of rides in the park. Screamin, Mulholland, Sun Wheel, Monorail, Dumbo, Astro Orbitor, etc, etc.

I think enclosing the vehicles will take all of the fun out of the experience and I'd almost rather see them bulldoze the track and NOT replace it, than replace it with enclosed vehicles.

While it is a worry about spitting and throwing things out, the state of CA (DOSH) REQUIRES a certain amount of clearance with open vehicles, basically requiring that a large person with long arms can't touch the sides of any structure.

Safety first.

So if they want to use the current People Mover/Rocket Rods track, they have to enclose the vehicles to prevent someone from touching a structure.

I think "enclosed" here can be two different things:

This is entirely enclosed:
From the 1976 film Logan's Run:

or this......

Versus .. Some sort of design that has large enough viewing openings ... with obstructions to keep us from getting our hands and feet outside the vehicles.

My educated guess says .. Disney will go with that latter idea. Because complete closure means windows .. which get dirty very easy .. Some pranksters would no doubt do grafitti on them .. but worst: A/C-Heating systems for each vehicle!
I wouldn't want to be in one .. when the A/C compressor breaks down .. or worse yet, the fan blower breaks down. They would have to create the world's most reliable AC systems for each vehicle.

I think if they just devise a way to keep us animals from reaching outside the confines of the vehicle .. we'll have our design!

They could just order more Sun Wheel Cages and put those on the PM track.

<<I think if they just devise a way to keep us animals from reaching outside the confines of the vehicle .. we'll have our design!>>

Over the past 40 years, a huge portion of the general public has simply had their brains implode - I'm certain of it. Too many Johnny Knoxville/Steve-O and/or gangbanger mentalities running around loose.

Remember the good old days when people (with the exception of the rare drunken college student who preferred leaping to his death between PM cars) actually adhered to the simple instructions - "Please keep your hands, arms, feet and lets inside the vehicles"...?

It bites that the idiots of the world have ruined so much for the rest of us. Of course, it's not exclusive to Disney parks... Ah well.

The real answer is:

Because the Disneyland Columbia sailing ship killed someone.

This was due to several failures, the result of official or unofficial policies of former CEO Michael Eisner and former Disneyland President Paul Pressler and those underneath them. This was the first fatality at Disneyland where it was entirely the fault of Disney.

Then, someone from Disney called the fatality the first major accident at Disneyland in a long time. This offended Kathy Fackler, whose son's foot was damaged on Big Thunder Mountain when he stuck it out of the ride. That's right - she was equating her son's damaged foot, caused by his own actions, with the killing of a man and severely injuring two people.

The Columbia incident gave those, like Fackler, who were pushing for more redundancies in government regulation of theme parks, the ammunition they needed to impose new state restrictions and oversights over theme parks, including Disneyland.

Of course, this didn't prevent Disneyland from killing a second person, this time on Big Thunder Mountain. So much for state oversight.

No, what got Disneyland back on track was Paul Pressler and his toadies LEAVING to get even more rich ruining another company, which has since booted them.

Meanwhile, while they enjoy their millions, Disneyland Cast Members deal with a host of extra regulations they did pretty well without for 45 years or so. AND - there are experiences that guests miss out on because of these extra restriction on design/operation of theme park attractions.

Adding to the problem was a court decision that determined in favor of a woman who fell ill after riding the Indiana Jones Adventure. It didn't matter that millions of other people rode without getting those kids of injuries... Disney is supposed to somehow know that this one woman was especially delicate. Anyway, the court decided that theme park rides are supposed to have the same level of non-stress on the body as commuter trains and buses, even though thoese are TRANSPORTATION and most people go on thrill rides for THRILLS, including G-forces.

So, because they may be someone who can stand up and contort and reach really far and tear his fingernail while riding the Peoplemover, the rest of us have to do without an open-air peoplemover.

Not that I am upset, or anything. I hope it was worth it, Paul.

Funny... the state doesn't make their own Department of Transportation (Caltrans) follow the same rules. Freeway lanes get reopened within hours after someone drives off of a transition bridge and dies... without the walls being raised or anything. So, they don't follow the same rule they impose on theme parks, which are gated and and every vehicle being loaded for dispatch is monitored by a live person... unlike the freeways.

Wow.... fascinating. Please enlighten me by telling me what those policies were.

Thanks.

Of course, Phantom's skipping the part about the old Peoplemover itself killing a couple of idiots.

The first was in 1967, long before Johnny Knoxville came along. A kid climbed out of his car and got run over.

Was the kid in the wrong? Absolutely. But that doesn't mean Disney shouldn't take reasonable steps to prevent it happening again.
