There are places where it would be pretty easy to take an arm or leg or head off on WDW's People Mover, but somehow people have managed to avoid doing that for over 35 years now.

Somewhere along the line you need to expect people to take care of themselves and not be idiots. An enclosed People Mover, even if it was just a wire 'cage', would wreck the ride.

^--That raises an interesting question. We've all heard the stories of guests being killed at DL (9 of them by Snopes's count, over the years), but I've rarely heard similar stories about WDW. Is safety handled differently there? Are guests there less stupid? (Seven of the nine guest deaths on DL attractions have been more or less the guests' own fault.)

Here's Snopes's list of the 9 people who've died on DL attractions:

<<Are guests there less stupid?>>

Yes, they are. WDW has far fewer unaccompanied teenagers than Disneyland.

What would people think about leaving the vehicles open but adding lap bars or seat belts to keep the riders from moving around too much?

I think refiguring the ride cars is ridiculous.

Is Disney recreating some new, thrilling ride from out of a Simpson's episode, or is it going to be closer to the old PM of which folks enjoyed just fine back in the day?

If you aren't smart enough to know how to keep your arms away from fast approaching walls and entry ways, then there really isn't much else to say.

As I recall, it wasn't a horribly suicidal ride. It was just a fun, slowish wind-in-you-hair type of ride where the feeling of freedom was welcomed. It really burns me that DL has become so "preventitive". When do parents become accountable? Those are the folks that should be put in special rides with cages.

Just my two cents.

>>As I recall, it wasn't a horribly suicidal ride.<<

The issue was the ride system itself, which was constantly running. Once you got hit and snagged, it was nearly certain that you would be crushed by one of the motors that were embedded in the track every 9 feet, before a cast member would have time to react and shut the thing down.

So while it seemed tame, it was actually one of the most dangerous attractions in the park if you didn't keep your fanny in the seat where it belonged. It had nothing to do with clearances or the speed of the ride.

BTW, these are State of California requirements we're talking about here, BTW, and not just Disney being overly cautious.

I'll take one of those BTW's, thanks LOL!

Your statement sounds correct, mawnck, but again, goes back to parents keeping an eye on their kids.

The new Peoplemovers will have airbags.

>>Please enlighten me by telling me what those policies were.<<

1. Overhauling the maintenance teams and processes in an effort to save money. Many experience maintenance people left. Many remaining ones lost morale. Many things started to break or wear down without being replaced.

2. Continuing the decision started in 1984 to not spend the money to attract the most conscientious and dedicated people to be cast members. By the late 1990s, it was getting to the point where it seemed like just about anyone with a pulse could be hired. High turnover also means less experience.

3. Bare-bones scheduling. A manager was filling in at the dock because a front-line cast member was late. There should have been another cast member there who was working the ride day in and day out who knew it better.

The Columbia was coming in to the dock too fast. The ride ops who worked it knew to let it go past, back up, and THEN put the rope on. The manager filling in didn't know that.

If I recall correctly, the rope was the wrong kind of rope, stronger than it should have been, because the right kind of rope was breaking too often.

If I recall correctly, the cleat on the ship that the rope would attach to also needed work, but didn't get that attention either because maintenance was overwhelmed or the ride ops were tired of reporting things like that only to have nothing happen.

The rope was placed around the cleat as the ship passed by too fast. When the rope was pulled taught, instead of breaking like it should have if it was the right kind of rope and the cleat was in goog shape, the cleat was pulled from the boat and slung back at the waiting crowd, severly injuring a woman and killing a man. The manager's leg was shattered in the process.

I WOULD LIKE TO STRESS THAT STEPS WERE SUBSEQUENTLY TAKEN TO PREVENT THIS FROM EVER HAPPENING AGAIN, AND DISNEYLAND GOT NEW EXECUTIVES THAT BOOSTED MAINTENANCE AND TIGHTENED OPERATING PROCEDURES.

It's a crying shame that the incident ever happened to begin with. It was entirely avoidable.
