>>As Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger continues to say publicly that he will hold the line against new taxes, his administration is laying the groundwork for a possible tax increase....

A broader levy that might affect all entertainment purchases -- including movie, theater and sporting event tickets, amusement park admissions, ski lift passes and greens fees -- could raise about $1 billion, according to state tax officials. Taxing the services of lawyers, accountants, mechanics, landscapers, hairstylists and every other service professional in the state could generate more than $8 billion, they say.<<

Much more at the link...

A one day Ticket to Disneyland would go from $69 to $74.50

A premium AP would go from $379 to $409, based on a 8% sales tax (some minor rounding was done)

Oops, one day ticket is $66, which would be $71.25 with tax

LOL, 2oony.

It's getting harder to plan a vacation because who knows how high prices will be in 6-9 months. Yikes!

Simply by taxing a small soda and a small popcorn at movie theaters would probably solve the budget shortfall. What's the tax on $12.75? : p

Wait a minute, though. Would this tax mean that Disneyland is tax deductible??? COOL!

I don't live anywhere near CA, what kind of sales taxes do you currently have now?

Depending on where you are in CA, it's anywhere from 7 1/4% up to 8 3/4%.

How about hotels, they are a service.

So a Disneyland Hotel room (using the average rate at TripAdvisor) for one night.

$456 room rate

$10 "resort fee"

That is $466, add the 15% Anaheim Hotel Occupancy tax, that makes a total of $535.90.

Now if they decide to charge sales tax to "services", do you charge sales tax on Hotel rooms, and do you also charge the sales tax on the occupancy tax?

Currently in California, we have a "CRV", which is a charge per bottle or can of most beverages (5 cents on small containers, 10 cents on larger ones). California does charge sales tax on CRV.

So if they charge tax on "everything", then we are looking at $578.78 total bill, with over $100 of the bill going to the government. (and of course, Disney still has to pay taxes on the profit made in renting the room).

And how about apartments, they are a "service"

Based on this chart...

http://www.apartmentratings.co...msa=4472

An average 1 bedroom apartment is going for $1,338 a month. If they decide to charge sales tax, the rent would go up to $1,445, or over $1,200 more per year.

All times are Pacific Time (US)
