I stumbled upon an ad in our school newspaper for an event next weekend focusing on Disney animators that I thought some of you guys might be interested in. It will feature James Baxter (Quasimodo and others), Andreas Deja (Jafar and others), Pete Doctor (Pixar story work), and Eric Goldberg (Genie and directing).

Apparently it's the 12th event like it, but I've never heard anything about it before. It's open to the public, and admission is $5. It will be a week from today (Friday the 9th) in the Samuel Goldwyn Theater at 7:30 pm. Of course, it will be taking place just a couple hours after I get on a plane home.

Ah yes -- the Marc Davis Celebration of Animation, put on by AMPAS (the Oscar people). Go if you possibly can. Change your flight.

These things always kick butt, and the Goldwyn Theater's projection system is to die for, as you might expect. The G.T. is in Beverly Hills. And lots of high-power industry people are guaranteed to be in attendance - not just the guys onstage.

Although the series was founded by Marc Davis, it's not necessarily Disney, but about animation in general. One year they did a thing all about Anime. I seem to recall that the now legendary Walt Disney 100th Anniversary celebration was also one of these.

And can you believe that ticket price? Get yours now - they'll go quickly, if they're not already gone.

James Baxter, by the way, owns the studio that did the animation for Enchanted.

Those animators, BTW, will be showing examples of animation that were influential in their own careers - most likely both Disney and non-Disney. I betcha we'll see some of My Neighbor Totoro.

I should have also pointed out that Pete Docter's "story work" included co-directing Monsters Inc. ;-)

Only $5? Sounds like a bargain for those of you on the West Coast.

Look at this:

If I lived just a liiitle bit closer, I wouldn't need a DVD player. I'd just hang out there.

And just to reiterate, their projection system is about a bazillion times better than (insert name of your favorite local theater here).

1. I wish I had seen this thread a few days ago...

2. Curse you SoCalers! Think that you're special with your El Capitan and your APs and your Laguna Beaches and Hills! ;P

I would have loved to have gone to this if I was in the area. :( Last year Andreas Deja was in LA and was a speaker at some gallery (Van Nuys?). He also signed stuff at the end...and it took place on my birthday! Arrgh!

One of the cool things that he drew was a picture of Lilo taking a picture of Scar, Jafar and Gaston. The latter is flexing his arm while his other arm is around Jafar, whose staff has accidentally poked Scar, who is visibly upset by this. :)
