I saw this while glimpsing at Yahoo (sorry Google) and thought of it as interesting, and as a change of the times. I'm neutral with the idea. What do you guys (especially the parents) think of it?

Thumbs down on co-ed dorms. Egads, I might turn this in to a World Events topic.

Co-ed classes in college, yes. Co-ed dorms, no.

The college in these cases is supposed to be acting as a substitute parent.

***The college in these cases is supposed to be acting as a substitute parent.***

Um, well no. The college in all cases is a place for higher learning for ADULTS.

It always astounds me that people consider collegiate adults to be a bunch of children in need of a babysitter. I sometimes wonder if that's what makes some of them act as childish as they do.

As for co-ed, two enthusiastic thumbs-up from me. Anything to help the cause, that's what I always say. ;)

Seriously, I don't see a real problem with this. If the students are going to have sex, they're going to have sex any way. Also, part of the "'College experience" is to help transition the student from a life of school, into the real life. Besides, I lived off campus usually with female roommates and there was absolutely no funny business (GRRRRRRRRRRR). ;)

I'm more worried about the binge drinking that goes on in college dorms than the sex!

Or, how about not allowing unemployed college students to have 12 credit cards?

I don't see a problem with it. For the most part they are talking about men and women rooming together who have no romantic interest in each other. I think it is good for college age guys to learn to see women as something other than just a potential sex partner.

I also think it is good for women to see that guys can be real human beings, and actually do have thoughts and feelings that don't involve sex.

Would I have wanted my daughter to live like that in college? Sure. She did. I think it was a good experience for her. She moved into a house with a group of guys (she had a private bedroom) during her senior year of college.

They spoiled the crap out of her and treated her like a little princess. She provided the money management skills they all lacked. She took responsibility for paying the bills and made sure that the guys all paid her their share. Overall I think it was a good experience for all of them.

Plus, she always had someone to drive her to school when it was cold outside. That was a good thing since daddy said he would pay for 100% of her college and living expenses, but would not pay for a car.

I would not have been ok with sharing a room with a complete stranger of the opposite sex when I was 18. It was hard enough with someone of the same sex - changing in the room and having privacy. I'm ok with them being in the next room, and even sharing a bathroom (with doors, etc), just as long as there is some private area. When I got older, even a couple years older, I probably could have handled it. Maybe it should be an option that a student and their parents (if around) decide on. I know a lot of people would not want it, and not just the parents.

>>Um, well no. The college in all cases is a place for higher learning for ADULTS.<<

Well, then uh, yes, ADULTS can pay for their own education then, without my tax money and without me as a parent paying for it. If you are independent, then you are independent. Taking money from someone else makes a person dependent. Dependent people do not have full autonomy.

>>It always astounds me that people consider collegiate adults to be a bunch of children in need of a babysitter.<<

Me too. That's why I think speech codes are so ridiculous at public universities.

If the guys are straight, the only time this is really true is if he finds her hideous. Or if he has an abnormally low sex drive.

>>I think it is good for college age guys to learn to see women as something other than just a potential sex partner.<<

Living together around the clock isn't the way.

>>She moved into a house with a group of guys (she had a private bedroom) during her senior year of college.

And they all wanted into her pants. Unless she was hideous.

Well too bad! We all need to get with it! We need to pretend that there's no sexual tension going on where people are actually living together, while at the same time insisting that people that age should be freewheeling away in such activities at that age.

Yet another place where guys will not be allowed to be guys and with guys only, in a platonic sense. Yet another place where guys will have to walk on eggshells and conform to feminine sensibilities and sensitivities or risk being charged with sexual harassment.

I understand why we do that for the workplace. But now the dorm room, too? Men have lost their clubs, too. Sometimes, straight guys just need places where we can be a guy and hang out with the guys without women around, or without worrying about offending a woman. Women should have the same thing. No, a restroom isn't enough.

I'd say this speaks to your own views and hangups more than anything.

I have plenty of friends, male and female, who are plenty attractive and yet I only regard them in a platonic sense.

And that was the same when I was college-aged as well.

By the way, nice way to talk about someones' daughter.

***Well, then uh, yes, ADULTS can pay for their own education then, without my tax money and without me as a parent paying for it.***

Many do. If you're talking about someone who gets help from a parent to co-sign on loans they themselves will eventually pay off, the vast majority, well all I can say is there's no other realistic way for someone to get their education out of high school. And I don't see that as being dependent, I see it as someone giving them a helping hand.

Doesn't mean they have the right to dictate what the other person does with their life, though.

***Taking money from someone else makes a person dependent. Dependent people do not have full autonomy.***

According to your theory, anyone who is receiving medical disability from the state shouldn't have full autonomy over their lives.

Is this how you see it?
