Autism. That is my thing. Anytime someone's child is diagnosed with it I get a call. (I have two sons with Autism.)

"So and So's cousin's brother-in-law's friend's nephew's neighbor's" child was just diagnosed with Autism. Can you call them and help them out."

"We know you'll make them feel better because you are always so happy."

(The only thing I can suggest to make them happy is to plan a trip to DL!)

My nephew got married last month. We attended with all 7 kids. They were all having a good day and at the wedding they were quiet and attentive. At the reception, we took an entire table ourselves, which sounds intimate and inconspicuous, but lots of people stared, which doesn't bother us. The kids were very patient as I made a few trips returning with the usual nuts, cheese sticks, quiche-type things, cake, and punch.

ANYWAY...

It was a beautiful wedding.

People - friends, family, acquaintances, people I don't know who see me in Target (a dad alone with 5 or 6 young children I'll admit is rare) ask me all the time for parenting advice. Usually it's problem specific. "how do you manage all that laundry?" "how do you keep your house clean?" "how do you handle it when the teacher calls because humour child did this or that at school?" and the constant joke of "wow I only have two and I have trouble managing them, I don't know how you do it!"

I used to really try and give my 2 cents worth to people who really wanted help, especially to family and friends. But nowadays I just smile and say something like "It's just what I do."

Here is why I don't share or give what could be very easy fixes or real help to others.

My brother in law asks me all the time how to handle this or that as a father with his son who behaves terribly at school. How do I tell him to put down his TVremote, turn off the ESPN, and go play outside with a boy who longs for his father's attention and approval?

My good friend asks me how he can make his 7 year old a good student? The childs grades are horrible. How do I tell him to spend extra time at night on homework, and check into tutoring, and get him tested for learning disabilities, instead of spending hours at the batting cages and nights playing catch?

I get asked sooo much about my kids. I am the go to guy for parents. But these days I just keep my pearls to myself. If pressed, I will say ,"just make sure you love them, hug them, kiss them, tell them everythings going to be alright even if you know its not, make them feel loved and let them know what's expected of them. All any kid wants is to know that you love them, that you are there for them. Really its all that any of us want from each other.

So yeah, I have 7 fantastic kids. I get asked questions across the spectrum all the time. Usually I keep my mouth shut and smile. I realize MOST of it is due to luck or providence, but the other 10% is common sense and love.

great topic!

Im another one asked for advice, (Im actually doing it right now via text)

My close friends call me agony aunt. Im proud that they think I can help and that I will keep things a secret.
Really proud.

Patrick laughs and calls the chair I usually sit in on an evening my advice chair, Im often answering texts on both my cell phones, e mails and on MSN trying to help friends at the same time. One night last week it was computer help on one phone, dream annalasis on the other and boyfriend trouble on MSN.

Only problem is that I often get myself in a tizzy then worrying that my friends are worried!!lol

Im also famous for hair dye advice ...lol...not sure why.

(no cooking advice you notice?)

I'm somewhat concerned that you're the person to go to for hair dye advice too ;D I suppose it's ok so long as it's not colour advice... Need I mention the mascara??

I'm the holiday person, anyone who's planning a trip, pretty much anywhere (although especially disney) always seems to come to me for advice...

LOL!
