Well Beau claims to be extremely happy and he's a conservative. Must be true.

Well, according to that study,

"Individuals with conservative ideologies are happier than liberal-leaners, and new research pinpoints the reason: Conservatives rationalize social and economic inequalities."

That would describe ol' Beau, for sure.

>>"Individuals with conservative ideologies are happier than liberal-leaners, and new research pinpoints the reason: Conservatives rationalize social and economic inequalities."<<

This has long been my theory. My impression has been that many conservatives only view things through their own lens and their own experiences, so they have less tolerance for things. Hurricane Katrina is a perfect example; rather than understanding what it's like to be a poor American who's never had a drivers license, who's never been more than 20 miles from home, conservatives looked at that situation and blamed the victims. Why didn't they leave? Why didn't they help others leave? Why did they loot? *I* wouldn't have done those things, *I* would've left, so they should've too.

Conservatives see a homeless person and think, *I" wouldn't be homeless. If I lost my job, I'd get another one. Why don't they go get a job? They think, *I* wouldn't choose to be gay. Why would someone do that? I like women, why don't gay people. They simply can't appreciate that other people have had radically different life experiences that have led them to make decisions (or not make decisions) the rest of us wouldn't make.

They look at the situation, think what they would do, and then blame anyone who doesn't make the same decision they would.

Tolerance or lack of it isn't the exclusivity of liberals or conservatives. It's more of those that claim their tolerant are the least tolerant people you'll meet. Not to mention the reverse of those who don't announce their tolerance to the world tend to be more tolerant.

<<Hurricane Katrina is a perfect example; rather than understanding what it's like to be a poor American who's never had a drivers license, who's never been more than 20 miles from home, conservatives looked at that situation and blamed the victims. Why didn't they leave?>>

These you have a good point on especially if you don't know a person's situation which I still argue is not the exclusivity of one particular group.

<<Why didn't they help others leave? >>
Well it would have been the charitable or even Christian thing to do.

<<Why did they loot? *I* wouldn't have done those things, *I* would've left, so they should've too.>>

Well I'm going to give liberals some credit and believe that most of them wouldn't condone those types of actions

That is without a doubt the most ridiculous conclusion in the history of scientific studies, and how does it square with the fact that conservatives give more to charity than liberals?

It is so transparent that they set out to find some sort of justification for that 2006 which held results they didnt like.

What a joke!!!!!

"My impression has been that many conservatives only view things through their own lens and their own experiences, so they have less tolerance for things."

That's a contradictory statement. If someone is less tolerant, then I would think they would tend to be unhappy. Yet we just said that conservatives were happier.

I think it's more of an optimist/pessimist kind of thing. Liberals I know are always finding some inequity in life to complain about - many of them spend their entire lives looking for the negatives around them, while conservatives I know recognize that things are not always fair, but they don't spend every waking hour bemoaning the state of our society.

Think about the presidents who have had the most impact on the psyche of the American people - Franklin D. Roosevelt and Ronald Reagan come to mind first - they first and foremost changed attitudes of the people and made them feel good about themselves. It's sort of a nationwide self-esteem program that we need. When people in a country spend all their time thinking how miserable and bad off they are, they begin to believe it, the national morale goes down, and other nations of the world begin to follow the same path.

<<Liberals I know are always finding some inequity in life to complain about>>

Well, if we follow that logic, maybe it's because they want things in the world to be better for everyone, not just themselves? Who knew that finding problems to solve was a character flaw.

Yes, a lot of liberals seem to feel the weight of the world but could it be more than they just want to complain about it? Maybe they are less capable of shutting down and ignoring the bad things they see? Or are they just bemoaning and whining? Some people can't enjoy life when innocent people are being murdered or starving to death. There are days when I watch the news and feel a lot of sadness. I'm such a whiner! I should just be looking at my cozy home and full refrigerator and feel hunky dory.

So, we see liberals using their voice to speak out about social issues...what else should they do? Not talk about it at all, or only talk about it the appropriate amount deemed by conservatives?

I don't really believe in this sort of absolute thinking but it seems lots of people still do. As long as we keep thinking of us vs. them kind of thoughts, things will never get better. We should be looking for our common ground, not the things that make us different.

As to Reagan making people feel great about themselves, I think that huge parts of the country missed out on that good-time feeling while he was in office. But I supposed I'm just being too negative to point that out.
