Jim Hill took a look at the new Hard Rock Park that is soom to be opening at Myrtle Beach. I have to admit it looks rather interesting with attractions that include a night time show set to the Queen classic, Bohemian Rhapsody.

As a theme park, hard rock cafe, and music fan, this park has me tempted. But I think my kids need to grow up a little before we go.

I am so pumped for this park, I am headed to Georgia next year for business and am making a weekend trip to see this park...

Interesting that they are still doing tests with the water coaster they have. It looks exactly like (and I wouldn't be the least bit surprised if it was) the one that was at the water park near where I lived in NC, with a fresh coat of paint. It only operated for one summer, and sat there empty and unused for at least 3-4 years, while the play area under it was still open. I wonder if they're having any trouble with the elevator-like lift, since that always made me worry a little.

And the worst part of it all? It was an extremely boring coaster (lasted no more than 45 seconds) with very little water involved (which could be changed pretty easily). It just screamed bad idea all around, so it's interesting to see the same layout popping up again (and so close to the original!).

I wonder if that's part of the reason the water park got bought out by Wet N Wild the very next year...

After a little bit of sleuthing, I found out that it is in fact the exact same coaster! Here's some information about it on the Wikipedia article for the water park:

"The park's first, and only, water roller coaster. The ride was closed in late 2003 because of technical difficulties with the attraction such as the ride stopping. A portion of it was demolished for Dragon's Den, Wet 'n Wild Emerald Pointe's newest ride. Most of the ride will be moved to the Hard Rock Park in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina and be reconstructed as a new attraction called 'Slippery When Wet.'"

That's a real shame, since it really was a very terrible coaster without any redeming qualities that I can think of. Low capacity (4 person cars leaving every 30 seconds or so), low thrill, low water, low excitement, low reasons to ever go on it in the first place. If they knew it had technical difficulties, I really wonder why they are using it. I really doubt that letting it just sit there for 5 years and rot will do anything to help it work better...

A ferris-wheel style loading on a roller coaster sounds fun. Is this the same one?

Any links to pictures?

It's a different one, but that did sort of confuse me. What exactly does it mean? Will the loading be painfully slow and take 2/3 of the time that you're actually on the ride, or will it be more fun that that? I'm sort of picturing something like the swinging gondolas on the Sun Wheel, but instead of just the short track on the wheel, it's a full blown coaster. That sounds like it could be pretty fun, to me at least...

Here's a picture of the model of the ride with the Ferris Wheel lift. It looks like it will be an interesting ride with 'Mini Cooper' themed cars.

From what I'm hearing, though, is that they are having problems with it since it is a prototype. They're hoping to have it operational by June from what I'm hearing.

As for the "Slippery When Wet" coaster, I think whoever wrote that for Wikipedia is wrong. It is similar to the one you mentioned, Ferret, but, it is an entirely new ride built for the Hard Rock Park. The one built for Emerald Point was built by Caripro. HRP's is being built by Premier Rides. Very similar rides, yes, but two different manufacturers.

And as for 'boring' rides, I would agree. I've ridden similar rides (built by ANOTHER manufacturer, Setpoint) at Carowinds, near Charlotte, and at Hersheypark in PA. Wet - yes, exciting - not really. It's a fun ride for kids, that's about it.

Here's a photo of the actual Maximum RPM! coaster and it's Ferris Wheel lift. According to Screamscape, it should be opening soon.

I apologize, Ferret. You may be right about the Slippery When Wet coaster coming from Emerald Point waterpark. The track and cars look almost IDENTICAL to the one that operated there. It's possible that Premier Rides modified the old Caripro ride for use at Hard Rock Park.
