I actually live two-doors down from a family of 18 children here in Salt Lake City. They make it on the local news from time to time, but unlike the Duggars, they don't go seeking it out. They also are a sort of "Yours, Mine, and Ours" situation - they already had a lot of children and got married, and they also have some foster children.

They're very nice people, and their 14 year old daughter babysits for us. In the little time we've chatted with her, it sounds like a tough, if loving, environment. The older kids are obviously raising the younger kids. The kids rarely get time to themselves; that's why our babysitter is always so anxious to babysit - she gets a TV and a fridge to herself. In fact, last time, her little brother asked if he could come over too, he didn't care if we paid him or not.

I hesitate to say anything negative because I really like this family. But suffice it to say, I also see a lot of red flags. I'm glad they're willing to take in some many foster kids who might otherwise be in a worse environment. But I don't see why anyone would voluntarily bring that many children into the world like the Duggars. It's not fair to the kids; they simply can't get the attention they need. My wife and I struggle to give our kids the time and attention they deserve - and there's only two of them.

^^I agree, ECDC...

And there's something pretty cool about the Yours, Mine and Ours thing (especially with foster kids), that's very lacking with the Duggars - who give me the creeps.

I have to wonder about the self-image of a woman who bears 18 children. This seems like an odd kind of psycopathy, aided and abetted by her husband - and perhaps their church.

This kind of behavior is aberrant at best, and should not be celebrated.

It's time for another Constitutional amend. on "term" limits.

*LOL* Barboy!

Totally agree, gadzuux.

I'll bet they are great parents. And with the number of people in the house I bet lack of attention isn't a problem for any of them.
I'll admit its a bit odd, but so what. This is America, Land of the free, home of the brave. If they want to have 18 kids and aren't on welfare, what business is it of mine other than to say "Ccongrats on the new baby."
