As 1 of 8 children, I got very little attention from my parents. They relied too much on my older siblings to raise me, which all big families do. Children should be raised by parents, not other children.

I think having too many kids is immoral.

***I think having too many kids is immoral.***

That really begs the question though...how many is "too many"?

And of course that varies from place to place, family to family...

I doubt anyone would argue that 18 is "too many" lol. Unless you are George Lucas and have a big old ranch and lots of bucks for housekeeping help.

Anyway though, my Grandpa had 11 brothers and sisters...that seems ridiculous in this day and age but back then his Mom was having kids as often as possible, to go out and work and make money for the family (sad, but true).

BUT...when they all grew older they were also very close and it was nice to have such a large extended family. So, who's to say right? My Gram had four, my Aunt had five, and even that seems "extreme" these days but it was the norm back then (in the baby boom days)...and now people seem to keep it down to two. BUT, two seems almost empty compared to the "big family" where there are lots of siblings running around.

So again, how many is too many?

If I had the means, I wouldn't mind having six or eight kids, and I really mean that. The reason I don't is because I know full well I can't support such a brood, but I'd love to do so if I thought it was not only possible but also fair to all involved.

I seriously think that 0-2 is the perfect range.

I was an only child and I think I missed out on a lot because I didn't have any siblings. My step-sister was one of four who were spaced apart by three years each. She enjoyed her older siblings but says her parents did get tired of all the photo taking and family trips by the time she was growing up.

Personally, I think parents have "too many" when they start to rely on the older children to raise the younger children.

Agreed. I also think the ability to provide for children is something that's important too.

We have a child worshiping culture. Everywhere we go you can now hear Helen Lovejoy screaming "Won't someone please think of the children!" Don't get me wrong, I have two boys that I love very much. I hate that our culture pays lip service to family values but really values money and capitalism over family; I see my co-workers more than I see my kids, and I hate that.

But we do have children worship in our culture. And so we have environments where we say, "oh, that's so precious" to things like the Duggars. Many news stories try to present two sides of the story or try to have a balanced approach. You'll note that doesn't happen with the Duggars' story or with stories about women on fertility drugs who give birth to septuplets. There's no experts talking about how 18 children is too many for the parents to give them the attention they need. There's no one talking about the dangers of fertility drugs or of giving birth to seven kids at once. It's the last news story of the telecast, the one that's supposed to warm your heart or make you feel good, right alongside the 6 year old piano prodigy or the cat that fell off an 8 story ledge and survived.

My Mom is one of 12. Actually 13, but one died quite young. No twins. My grandma has children from the age of 18 to the age of 45, spaced almost exactly 2 years apart.

They were a farm family. As I understand it, it was pretty much either hire farmhands, which they couldn't afford, or have kids.

I don't know how they managed it, but all the kids turned out well, and it was kind of cool having so many aunts and uncles and cousins. I know the grandparents and extended family helped out in a way that was very common at the time in rural America. With the family farm giving way to huge agribiz conglomerates, this is almost gone now.
