My first response when I read the headline was "how would HE know?". What he does here is endorse some other pope's statement about birth control from 1968. This is just me, but I always wonder where popes get off telling their members what they can and can't do when it comes to sex, a topic they really ought to know nothing about. That might be seen by some as an uninformed viewpoint, but as someone who has no use for the Catholic church that's how it seems to me.

Somewhere there are studies saying that most Catholics are liberals. Maybe they're done by conservatives, I don't know. But if that's so, what a paradox. Liberals want the government out of the bedroom and out of personal choices, which is fine by me. But most Catholics are supposed to be liberals and they got to a church that has taken up permanent residency right in the middle of their bed. THEN, to top it off, conservatives are for allegedly for less government yet they also crowd the bed when it comes to personal decisions (i.e. abortion, gay marriage, etc.). And most conservatives are purported to be protestant.

My head hurts.

>>My first response when I read the headline was "how would HE know?".<<

Religion makes it so people don't have to have first-hand experience, they don't have to "walk a mile" in someone else's shoes. A perfect example is how some religions treat gays and lesbians. They'll flat out tell them they're not really gay, or that it's just a choice, or that it's their cross to bear. How on earth would they know? They don't, but their Bible (the one that was written when people owned other human beings and crapped outside - a real modern book) tells them everything they need to know, so they think they can tell others what their experiences really are.

Talk about speaking about things that one doesn't know anything about...this topic has started off in that very same direction.

First, if you are not catholic it shouldn't mean a whistlers wink what the Pope does or doesn't say about anything.

If you are catholic then you already know what things to follow and what things to just listen too, nod your head and do whatever you want anyway.

Also the misconception that the Pope doesn't know anything about sex is silly as well. He wasn't born the Pope. At one point up to and beyond the age of puberty there was a good chance that he was a lay (tee hee) person and might very well have experienced sex. There is no test to determine Virginity accurately.

Secondly...and I have to explain this all the time, Unless he is sitting on St. Peters Throne and wearing the big pointed hat (there's a name, don't remember) and declaring something as official church doctrine, the whole idea of infallibility is completely misinterpreted constantly. If the above doesn't happen then it is no more than his opinion anyway.

I think the Pope is 100% correct. Sex can be addicting and get out of control. Why else would so many important men; presidents, governors, congressmen, etc, engage in sexual activities that they KNOW are wrong and that they KNOW will destroy them and their families if they are discovered?

That sounds a whole lot like addiction to me. In this case at least the Pope knows what he is talking about.

First - sex isn't an "addiction", it's a "drive". We're all born with it, each and every one of us - it's nothing to be frightened of.

So no - obviously the pope DOESN'T know what he's talking about. As usual. This is why popes are essentially useless - you know what they're going to say YEARS before they do. They have to say this stuff, it's just part of the job. As 'goofyer' says above, most people pay no attention and go right ahead with whatever they want.

Second - the primary purpose of the catholic church is to instill guilt. And fear. And shame. It's what they do. But it only works to the degree that individuals allow it to, which is to say - not very much.

But what's a pope to do? You're only a "leader" as long as people are willing to follow you. Within the catholic church there's a longstanding tradition of quietly dismissing and rejecting those teachings that aren't aligned with your own beliefs - you know, "right and wrong". You already know right from wrong, and what the pope has to say is essentially irrelevant.

As everybody knows only too well, the catholic church has been embroiled in a sex scandal with abusive pedophile priests that vast and pervasive. So imagine the chutzbah it takes for him to stand before the world and speak to sexual issues such as chastity, purity, and compulsive behaviors. People who live in glass houses ...

Finally, and I touched on this a few weeks back during the pope's "rock star" tour of the US, anybody wearing that drag is going to elicit the the same response from the true believers - the squeals of excitement, the packed stadiums, the phony and manufactured spiritual swoons that people experience. This guy is no more "holy" than I am. Or you are. He's just the latest guy they tapped for the job. That's it.

The bible says "beware of false prophets" - you could look it up, it's somewhere in the back. The pope - ANY pope - only has as much influence and sway as you surrender to him. Don't do it - think for yourself and disregard anything this ridiculous egomaniac in red prada shoes has to say.

That should be in the bible too - right up front.

I disagree. I think that the Pope was including the abusive priests in his comment:

<<and worried that sex could "transform itself into a drug" that one partner had to have even against the will of the other.>>

Anyone who would deny the potentially addictive nature of sex is just as out of touch, in my opinion, as the Pope is.
