Sex is a natural impulse. But if you believe that one day you will be in heaven without a body, isn't it best to start getting out of the sex habit now? Otherwise heaven may become hell.

God bless the pope for speaking the truth.

"Start getting out of the sex habit"?? Is that the message of the pope? Is that "the truth"? Sex leads to hell?

See - this is what happens when people listen to this stuff and believe it.

If there wasn't sex in heaven, how could it be heaven? ;)

I knew a priest once, very cool guy, who said "premarital sex is a sin. doing it without protection is TWO sins".

Hope he didn't get drummed out for his "controversial" views.

I feel that the catholic position on birth control is one of their most shameful and irresponsible teachings.

Even within the supposed sanctity of marriage, they continue to regard sex as a dirty, shameful thing that should only be considered as a means for conception and nothing more.

How many young girls ended up pregnant because the church taught her that condoms were evil? How many lives were ruined this way?

And how many large families, already struggling, continued to bring kids into the world they couldn't hope to support..based on the orders from the Vatican?

I'm not even going to get into the poverty stricken countries where aids and unwanted births are absolutely at a crisis level and have been for a long time. Does the church ever address that stuff?

Talk about irresponsible. They should be ashamed.

Sex can become an addiction, like many other things.

>>Sex can become an addiction, like many other things.<<

No, not really. It can become a compulsion for people who are already inclined to be obsessive compulsive. Again, using the word "addiction" brings to mind a drug addiction, which is not even close to the same thing. I'm a whole lot better off if I never use cocaine. But sex is a biological need, and one that is necessary for the existence of our race.

Is this spoken from experience?

<I think it is about time that the catholic church change its views on birth control, but, to be honest, there are very few catholics that follow that line of thinking anyway.>

In this country, that's true. I don't know a Catholic couple that doesn't use birth control. Not so true elsewhere.

<So, that item is mute>

"moot," actually (sorry, pet peeve)

<even in third world countries because very few are catholic and their health needs are being tended to, for the most part, by people that see the benefit.>

Latin America is predominantly Catholic. And while birth control is available in some Latin American countries, in some others it is hard to get, largely due to the influence of the church.

By the way, two things the Catholic church opposes unambiguously are birth control and - even more so - abortion. But there have been numerous studies showing that countries that make birth control available decrease their rates of abortion substantially.

http://www.guttmacher.org/pubs...407.html

"Extensive evidence demonstrates, however, that when modern contraceptives are made available to women, their increased use over time replaces previous reliance on abortion and becomes the major factor associated with reduced abortion rates. Policymakers seeking to reduce the incidence of abortion would do well to address its root cause-unintended pregnancy-by facilitating widespread access to modern contraceptives and by promoting their effective use."

(snip)

"Just as the data show that women have abortions despite restrictive laws, they also indicate that women do not have abortions because of liberal ones. Some of the world's lowest abortion rates are in western European countries, where abortion is not only legal but also covered as a standard service by national health insurance systems: For example, the abortion rate in Germany is less than one-quarter that in Columbia, and the rate in the Netherlands is some six times lower than the rate in the Dominican Republic."

(snip)

"In societies in which the desire for smaller families is strong, women will use every available resource and method to control their fertility. In the case of Russia and many other eastern European countries-where small families have long been the norm but modern contraceptives have mostly not been available-abortion rates historically have been among the world's highest. (Until quite recently, the contraceptive options available to Russians were largely low-quality condoms and one-size-fits-all diaphragms.) Russia legalized abortion in 1955 in response to the public health problem of illegal procedures. At that time, it was not uncommon for a woman wanting only two children to have 10 or more abortions in her lifetime, and as late as 1990, Russia's abortion rate was well over 100 per 1,000 women of reproductive age.

The situation began to change in the late 1980s, when free market reforms opened the door to modern contraceptives made in western Europe. Then in 1992, the Russian government, which had always subsidized abortion services, began subsidizing family planning programs and promoting contraceptive use by distributing free contraceptives. The results have been dramatic: In the ensuing decade, contraceptive use rose and the abortion rate plummeted (see chart)."

(snip)

(referring to the US): "In contrast, the evidence clearly shows that contraceptive use works. On a personal level, it reduces the probability of having an abortion by an estimated 85%. And at the program level, publicly subsidized family planning services in the United States have been shown to have helped women prevent 20 million pregnancies over the last 20 years, nine million of which would have been expected to end in abortion. Indeed, in the United States today, the small fraction of women-some 7%-who are sexually active and at risk of unintended pregnancy but do not practice contraception are responsible for almost half of the unintended pregnancies and nearly half of the abortions."

You hit the nail on the head, Dabob.

For those who find abortions to be a bad thing (include me here, though I would never advocate that it be illegal), contraception cuts down on those unnecessary deaths by a LOT.

And yes I do believe killing an unborn child is still a death.

It's easy to think it's not, but it really is imho.

My wish is for abortion to be legal, and extremely rare.

And contraception is one of the keys to that end...

Yet the stupid church advocates killing more babies due to its' stupid insistence on making a piece of rubber (a very useful piece, I might add) a sin.

How sinful. Of THEM.

I could have written one sentence much better, so here's my "take 2" (edit feature Doobie...edit feature...).

My wish is for abortion to be legal, YET extremely rare.
