I guess some folks just aren't as smart as you are.

<<"Rational Recovery">>

Sounds like one of those diet programs that never work.

Well, I would venture to say it works better than joining a cult, anyway. ;)

It actually has nothing to do with "smart", really. In fact, quite the opposite. The issue most people have with their bad habits (and, of course, ME TOO) is that they overthink things.

SO much judgementalosity out here--

"Yes, it IS like a drug!"

"No, it ISN'T like a drug!"

If it isn't for you, great; if it is for you over there, best wishes--but let's not throw down our subjective proclamations, aiiight?

After all, the pope was just speaking for himSELF when he said that, right?

"I STATEMENTS," people!

<<the guy claims to speak as the voice of god.>>

The guy speaks as the voice of the Catholic Church. Big difference.

I know that.

I said that's what they claim (and they do, don't they? infallible on matters of faith and morals and all that?).

So you can hardly call that the pope speaking "only" for himself.

Thus making his inane statements all the more shameful and immoral, since people, MILLIONS of people, fear going to hell and believe that the only way to please god is to do as the pope tells them to.

Shameful.

Speaking of not even touching reality. I, a few posts back, explained the conditions necessary to have the Pope speak for the CHURCH. If someone thinks that is the voice of god, well, they have the ability to be sold ocean front condo's in Arizona.

Given many think that the Church and God are the same, but, I don't think it has ever been stated that was the case.

The Pope is a job that comes with a responsibility to have studied situations, interpreted scripture and basically attempt to determine the churches stance on many issues. Unless, upon becoming Pope he is given an 800 number to God's private phone, (although I'm pretty sure he/she has a cell by now) (can you hear me now?) he can only hope that God has his back.

Until it gets signed into law it is mere opinion and the Pope can only hope that his opinion is respected enough to be followed.

Amazingly (sadly?) the pope and his opinion carry a lot of weight around the world.

Maybe it's the whole history of that church. Maybe it's because he's an incredibly powerful and wealthy monarch (few people seem to realize that).

Whatever it is, his "opinion" counts a great deal, and he should be more careful with his shameful and harmful proclaimations.
