"Whatever it is, his "opinion" counts a great deal, and he should be more careful with his shameful and harmful proclaimations."

Which is the point of my original post in this thread.

By the way, while I do not agree with what the Pope is saying a lot of the time, especially in regards to sex, the fact is it isn't inconsistent with the church's interpretation of the Bible. Really, it is up to the church and its members to believe what they want, but people aren't held hostage by the Catholic church. They can leave it if they wish, they can inform themselves that there are other sides to these issues, or not.

Hoping that an institution this old is going to suddenly shift course and think that sex outside of wedlock is okay is just not going to happen. So the only thing people can do is point out where they feel the church is mistaken, and fight the church's efforts to influence laws. If enough church members start vacating the pews, then, and only then, they "might" rethink or reexamine their interpretation of scriptures. Until then, they are convinced they have it right.

The church's position on birth control is kind of like speed limits. Most people don't pay much attention to them, but they are still officially the law.

You can't just remove those laws because then you'd have people driving 100 mph and millions of people fornicating in the streets. Getting run over by speeders no doubt.

Or something like that.

Again, my original objection to the term addiction isn't to suggest that people don't suffer from addict-like behavior or symptoms when it comes to sex.

My problem remains the link people like the Pope and other moralists make specifically to drug addiction. These are different issues, and the comparison continues to reinforce medieval attitudes that sex is dirty, wrong, and unnatural.

If it were to do that then Catholicism should never be called a faith/religion -- but solely a political machine.

Irrespective of popularity or numbers--- be they 100 or 100 million--- the church(or any faith) must be square with doctrine and tenets first and only otherwise they would be false prophets. Bending or reinterpreting "Gods' rules" to fit with modern day culture would make the church one fat joke.

What kind of faith would have an ounce of credibility if it catered to popularity at the expense of scripture/sound teachings.

Yup.

Why do you think they have their own sovereign country?
