I'm still looking forward to Ursula's comments on her book, but I'm going to go ahead and start LP Book Club #5.

My personal preferences are for non-fiction.

I enjoy history, such as _1776_, (but I'm not suggesting that 'cause it's america-centric and wouldn't be interesting for our international audience). I also enjoyed _A Walk In The Woods_ by Bill Bryson and would enjoy another of his memiors.

The following all come highly reccomended by friends.

Dillard, Annie _Pilgrim at Tinker Creek_
Armstrong, Lance _It's Not About the Bike_
Bernstein, Harry _The Invisible Wall: A Love Story That Broke Barriers_ Bradley, James _Flags of Our Fathers_
Mortenson, Greg _Three Cups of Tea_
Tolan, Sandy _The Lemon Tree_
Zusak, Marcus _The Book Thief_

Anybody have any other comments/suggestions?

Mrs ElderP: I've never read any Bryson, but I keep meaning to, so any of his would be good. No opinion on the others you list.

If you're interested in going back a few years, you might want to check out this site: http://www.randomhouse.com/mod...ion.html

It's a list of the 100 best English-language, non-fiction books of the 20th Century. Here's the top 10, as chosen by the board of the Modern Library:

1. "The Education of Henry Adams" by Henry Adams
2. "The Varieties of Religious Experience" by William James
3. "Up from Slavery" by Booker T. Washington
4. "A Room of One's Own" by Virginia Woolf
5. "Silent Spring" by Rachel Carson
6. "Selected Essays, 1917-1932" by T. S. Eliot
7. "The Double Helix" by James D. Watson
8. "Speak, Memory" by Vladimir Nabokov
9. "The American Language" by H. L. Mencken
10. "The General Theory of Employment, Interest, and Money" by John Maynard Keynes

Just for laughs, here are the top 10 as chosen by the Modern Library's readers in an on-line poll:

1. "The Virtue of Selfishness" by Ayn Rand
2. "Dianetics: The Modern Science of Mental Health" by L. Ron Hubbard
3. "Objectivism: The Philosophy of Ayn Rand" by Leonard Peikoff
4. "101 Things to Do Til the Revolution" by Claire Wolfe
5. "The God of the Machine" by Isabel Paterson
6. "Ayn Rand: A Sense of Life" by Michael Paxton
7. "The Ultimate Resource" by Julian Simon
8. "Economics in One Lesson" by Henry Hazlitt
9. "Send in the Waco Killers" by Vin Suprynowicz
10. "More Guns, Less Crime" by John R. Lott

I love reading non-fiction myself. So I'd be up for anything and I'm curious about Bryson myself.

Alex, thanks for the list, I like lists!!

Okay, we have 3 whole readers, and Bryson is funny and a light read, so that seems good to me. I've already read A Walk In the Woods, so that's out. (Though I highly reccomend it!)

A Short History of Nearly Everything, at 500+ pages, isn't short enough to be read in a month or so, so, neh.

The books on language (The Mother Tongue and Made in America) as well as his childhood biograpy (Thunderbolt Kid) don't seem as interesting as his Travellogs.

The two best review of those are _In a Sunburned Country_ (Austraila) or _Neither Here nor There_ (Europe).

Any one have a preference?

P.S. Thanks so much for responding Alexbook or DAR, I thought I book club was going to die, and I was sad, :(.

I'm in, but I'm giving official notice, I'll be listening to the audio version of whatever you choose. Yeah I know it's cheating, but I spend too much time in the car driving to read it. So for me, the ears have it ! If that's okay, count me in. :)

I've already read Keynes and not by choice. :)

And I'm no Rand fan either. In my younger years maybe...

OOOh, I vote for Neither Here nor There but let's face it, I'll read anything.

The only non-fiction I read are travelogues and dictionaries.

Seriously. I enjoy skimming dictionaries and reading what words I don't know mean.
