Alexbook's "How do you say '2008'?" thread brought this nagging question to the front of my mind again.

What IS this decade called?!

Think about it. Have you ever heard a newscaster use a term for this decade?

Are we in "The 2000's"? The "Naughts"? The...

I honestly cannot remember anyone in the mainstream media even taking a tentative stab at it. It's as if this decade is unnameable -- that everyone is afraid to say the wrong thing, or that there just IS no term.

Nine years into it, and it's still the Decade With No Name.

Too weird.

You always ask the hard questions, don't you?

In my head I call it "the aughts". Aught one, aught two etc. That was the way my grandparents referred to a hundred years ago. However, I don't think I've ever said it out loud.

The day I use the word "aught" seriously is the day I stock up on Geritol and Big Diapers.

I call the decade the "oh-ohs," or actually, the "uh-ohs." An amazingly, it's not been inaccurate.

So far, Disney is calling it the Year Of A Million Dreams. LOL.

Well, I call it the two thousands. Next decade will be the teens. Then the twenties, thirties, forties and so on. Makes me feel like I'll be living through flappers, bootleg gin, and big band music...

I predict that, culturally, we're on the verge of a significant change. Starting in 2010, there will be a shift away from saying "two thousand" in favor of saying "twenty" - as in "twenty ten", twenty twelve" and so on.

It doesn't work for the first nine years because "twenty eight" sounds like 28, so it won't really kick in until 2010. But soon you won't hear anybody saying "two thousand" at all.

Ain't that cool?

Here it's referred to in the media as "the naughties". I, personally, don't really call it anything.
