But, it seems, he may deserve it.

I've been following this story since the charges were announced back in December.

Bernie Ward was obnoxious on the air. If people were in line with his views, they were allowed to speak. If not, he would intentionally misconstrue whatever they said, that is, when he didn't simply hang up on them. I wasn't a fan.

I'm having trouble with the whole "but I was doing research, that's all!" line of defense. That they didn't even pursue it and instead plea bargained tells a lot.

<<< That they didn't even pursue it and instead plea bargained tells a lot. >>>

I believe the story I read was that the judge was not going to allow the presentation of the "research" defense in court, and since that was his only defense, he decided to plead guilty as otherwise he'd have a trial with no defense. That well may be the case (that that was his only planned defense, not that it was actually true), but it seems a bit hollow, especially when you see the details. He did a lot more than just upload a picture - he reportedly engaged in a graphic online conversation with a mother about potential acts involving her daughter. Even had he just been doing research, a responsible reporter would have to take into consideration what affect such talk would have upon a mother.

I lived in the Bay Area and was a KGO listener about the time Ward went through his metamorphosis as a talk show host. He had always done his GodTalk show on Sunday mornings, and the rest of the week had an unremarkable, middle-of-the-road local call-in show. Then, he reinvented himself as a very left-leaning, in-your-face host that was attempting to syndicate his show nationally. I think quite a few people felt that he was trying to re-invent himself to become the left's version of Rush Limbaugh, but for several reasons, this just didn't work out.

He did actually, for a short time, have a syndication deal.

I find it interesting that he wouldn't coordinate this so-called research with legal authorities in order to keep himself out of trouble. Sure, it would draw attention to himself but someone on the up-and-up would deal with it. Or at least get an attorney and spell out your plan in advance or *something*.

My husband has had to copy child porn off of his company's computers in order for his company to send to the police to prosecute the pervs who download this stuff at work. It is haunting stuff. No one in their right mind would want to look at it unless it was absolutely 100% necessary. I don't buy this guys story one single bit. He could do the story w/o seeing any photographs.

Exactly. Common sense, if there is any truth at all to the "I was researching a book" defense.
