Speed Racer dropped nearly 60% for less than $8m. Iron Man held up well for $31m in its third weekend. I bet Paramount wish they didn't have just distribution deals now on Iron Man and Indy. :-) |

That's a REAL good point. There was a HUGE push for the first film, delving deeply into the religious market, with a very vocal response.
As the actual level of Sci-Fi/Fantasy quality and intensity (that would be a significant draw the real Sci-Fi/Fantasy fans) wasn't all that noteworthy, I was surprised at the numbers of the first film. If Disney is expecting this installment to be carried by the success of the first, they may be surprised. Those Sci-Fi/Fantasy purists may have decided that there just wasn't the depth of the likes of LotR or other typical successful Sci-Fi/Fantasy films.
As for the religious support, while they flocked in droves for the first film, they may have decided to skip this one because a) while the series has a religious infusion, they are just not into Sci-Fi/Fantasy genre, or b) Caspian is darker (and more "violent") and not as kid (or religious) friendly as the first.
So, the drop in numbers for Caspian doesn't surprise me. Those issues along with strong competition may take it's toll.

I don't think anyone expected Ironman to do so well, that alone has pulled people from Narnia.
Reviews on most sites are favorable so hoefully it survives the busy summer |

It looks Paramount will have the most to brag about this summer if Indy opens as big as people think it will. If it does at least $100 million opening weekend, then it will be fine. It shouldn't do too bad since it looks like all of its competition has died off before it even debut lol. |

| leemac Tue 5/20/2008 10:20a | ^^ Interestingly the early signs are Prince Caspian is going to play very well internationally. This is from Variety:
"Iron Man" stayed golden in its third frame at the foreign box office with $25.6 million at more than 5,000 playdates, while "The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian" debuted powerfully with $20.7 million at 2,000 in a dozen markets.
Disney's "Prince Caspian," which won't move into many markets until June, showed solid traction as it launched 33% above comparable markets for predecessor "The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe," which wound up with an impressive $453 million offshore. "Prince Caspian" also delivered well compared with "Iron Man," topping those launches by 14% in the same markets.
"Prince Caspian" posted its biggest grosses in Mexico with $7.5 million, 36% above the original, and in the booming Russian market with $5.6 million, 53% higher. South Korea matched the original with $3.5 million, while India jumped 57% to $935,000 and Malaysia rose 18% to $924,000.

It's probably going to be Iron Man, the movie is having unheard of drops, dropping less than 40% this past week. |

No way. "The Dark Knight" will be the #1 movie of the summer.
Narnia didn't preform well because people are just cutting spending across the board due to the economic recession in this country. The cost of gas and goods is going up and people are getting foreclosed on left and right. They just dont have that extra $10 to go see the latest movie in theathers. |

The Dark Knight is too dark to be the number 1 movie.... |
