that article was pretty much how i am feeling at the moment. Some of disney fans can be so negative in the way disney builds rides, parks, etc. I have to admit, i feel that some of disneys decisions derseve some critism but being negative beyong believe is not going to help matters. I mean look were it as gotten us, imagineers and disney ignoring the fans. I love the part were he talks about fans protesting infront of the parks because vmk is closing down and they are acting as if the world is ending when there is much more to be worried about and fight back about such as the war with our troops dying like he pointed out, the government and even global warming to me it seems such a waste of energy to complain and protest things to such degree that they can use that energy for something else as stated above. Ive just learned that disney is going to do what disney wants. and the only way they will learn is to keep making mistakes that will cost them in the long run. Do i hope that happens, of course not, there is a very bright future in my mind for disney.

About the fan community.. many people attended and the Epcot's 25 event. That's people who weren't just APs or locals, but generally people who knew about the private event planning.

Another Epcot example, look at the lines for SSE immediately afte it reopened. Epcot was not that busy, but enough people got into line for an attraction that moves 2200 people an hour to give it 45+ minute waits.

It wasn't on the park maps, you can't say it was because SSE was there - its popularity had dwindled prior to closure - so people who knew and road had to find out here or another spot in the fan-dom.

There's more people then most want to believe. The UG sells enough books to be a top book every year.

Would Disney prefer that the closing of a product not ellicit even a whisper. Are people nuts? Yes. I don't understand the issues. This is nothing new, and why can't they descerne the shoot from the Shinola.

<<It's hard to tell sometimes if you're kidding or not. My guess is that the online fan community might number as high as 5,000 or so.>>

And I wonder if you're kidding here ... or simply talking about those who may actively take part in posting on various Disney sites... because if you're talking about the fans who simply lurk, read, etc ... that number is many multiples of your figure.

A tiny minority of folks (like us) put themselves out there and take part in discussion forums.

Most people just click.

****People don't want to hear what they aren't doing well. Guest Relations at Disney truly used to be about taking every guest compliment, complaint or concern seriously. Now, it's about getting them out the door with a free character breakfast with as few 'f-bombs dropped as possible.****

<<Interesting way to put it.>>

I try X. I try.

<<I wonder if "not wanting to hear it" is less relevant these days in comparison to the way in which disenting customers are voicing their unhappiness.

In other words, are the creators and management not so much "anti-criticism" as they are just overall feeling like they are being viciously attacked?>>

I dunno. That's a very interesting question.

I'm sure the whole Internet component has brought about a more stinging level of criticism now than in the old days.
And I don't care who you are or how thick your skin is, it's the nature of being human that you don't want to read about how lousy a job you're doing (true or not) or how worthless your work is and why you should lose your job.

Let's face it, none of us would want that scrutiny. But I bet 95% of people here would take it in a minute to be an Imagineer or Disney exec.

So I guess I'm saying it just goes with the territory and showing it bothers you online like Jim's whiner did isn't smart.

As to criticism in general (both Disney and just in general) I'm starting to think that dropping F-bombs really is the way to go. The people who do so always seem to get results -- and the kind of results they are seeking. I, on the other hand, am a kinder, gentler spirit and try and use reason and professional tones to get what I feel I should and it doesn't seem to work very much.

So sadly, it seems like yelling and screaming and berating people is the best way to get satisfaction because no one seems to value civility and kindness anymore.

<<Seems like that could be a fair thing to discuss.

I can say honestly that if I were expecting "f-bombs" (why, oh why is that so much better than writing the word?? EVERYONE knows what we're talking about right? Just like the "n-word" and all that...BIG pet peeve but I'll respect the community at large in that it is somehow, I dunno why, better to write "F-Bomb" and "N-Word" than the two words that everyone reading this knows I would write if it were "PC"...but I digress), I wouldn't be all that receptive to criticism in my work either.

I'd probably feel more like F-Bombing them right back.>>

Yep. And FWIW I agree with you about being PC. We are all adults (or teens) here and everyone has been exposed to our national word. While I'm not a big proponent of obscenity as a method of getting points across at some point it becomes ridiculous. As someone just back from Europe, it just reminds me yet again of how puritanical our culture is and things have gone back so much with a religious zealot in the White House (and I can't talk about that man without dropping a truckload of 'F-bombs' myself! ;-) )

Off topic but...

I'm an adult. I've been exposed to it. But I try to stay away from it and would prefer not to read it on a Disney discussion board. It has nothing to do with being PC and I'm sorry if that makes me puritanical. And yes, everyone does know what it means, and for that reason - while I understand its use in the context of this discussion - I would appreciate it if we could move on from it now. Thanks.

Doobie.

Speaking of Disney and not just in general, I see it as another example of how corporate cultures don't just suddenly stop on a dime overnight (or even over a few years), just because the leadership changes.

I don't buy this "The fans did themselves in" bulls___t.

As long as the company does not hold up to their famous PAST standards (ie- Pirates of the Caribbean, and all the famous details that made them great in the first place) .. then they will always be up for criticisms ... because we have the (better) past to compare to the (mediocre) present. (ie - TL98, DCA, ETC.)

^^That may be true, but it is also true that the constant complaining - from howls about no bathrooms in the Hyperion Theatre to whining about $1 increases in parking fees - has probably left a bad taste in management's mouth. Not to mention how a certain webmaster has pretty much set the tone for the online communities attitude toward DCA. I mean seriously, most of the complaining that goes on here has little merit. le complain about online.
