Far from stellar - seems there are some problems:

Dang it! I'm avoiding reading the reviews, but am sad to hear that it's not up to par.

I had very high hopes for this movie.

'Indiana Jones' is one of my favorite franchises.

I think for the first week, Indy is critic proof, look at how much Spider-Man 3 made and that movie was blasted by critics.

But after the first week, once WOM spreads, it will freefall rather quickly.

There are some BIG TIME spoilers in those reviews. Be warned!

That said, those reviews are hardly horrible. "Some problems" is about right -- not massive, destroy the movie sort of problems -- according to those reviews.

As long as they don't introduce I character named Jar Jar Jones, I am very pleased.

"MEESA SCARED OF THE BIGSA BALL INDYSA"

<<Dang it! I'm avoiding reading the reviews, but am sad to hear that it's not up to par.>>

Thats why I love Variety - they always do a brief synopsis without spoilers in bold at the top of the list.

I'm not a fan of Spielberg's direction at all but I'll still end up seeing it. His output has been so mixed - there are just too many AIs, Minority Reports, The Lost Worlds, The Terminals and The Terminals in his resume these days. But I guess it has always been that way - we all remember Hook for the wrong reasons. :-)

I'm a huge fan of Shia and Cate so I'm hoping they are going to be good value even if the script is another Koepp stinker.

Did anyone else hear the rumor that Lucas has an idea for Indy 5 where Shia is the star and Ford is the "Sean Connery" type supporting player?

Well, it would have to stink quite a lot to kill the buzz I have about this movie.

I think "Raiders of the Lost Ark" is about the most well-crafted, fun, re-watchable movie ever made. It hasn't ever been topped, even by the sequels.

That said, I did like "Temple of Doom" a lot. I know lots of people (Jim in Merced, I'm looking at you!) disliked it, but I thought overall it was pretty amazing. The mine chase sequence rivaled the jeep chase from "Raiders" for that giggly, heart-racing, what-can-happen-next excitement factor. After that point, the special effects weren't quite up to par, however, and this is especially true in the film's last 10 minutes. There are some strange inconsistencies as Indy is on the rope bridge -- sometimes the river below looks wide and flowing, other times it seems somewhat empty and rock-filled.

Some found Temple of Doom too dark and violent. I disagree, I thought it ramped things up by making the danger seem more intense and real (well, as real as possible when the bad guy plucks out still-beating hearts!).

"Last Crusade" righted the ship again, brought back the evil Nazis, and Ford & Connery were great fun together. It starts off fantastic with River Phoenix showing us why Indy hates snakes, how he got his chin scar and where the hate came from, but seems to stumble a bit before finding its footing (enter Connery).

So, I'm going into "Crystal Skull" with anticipation high. Can't wait!
