Does anyone know why this name was chosen for the food kiosk across from Toy Story Midway Mania? Considering all the fine work that has been done in that area, it seems out of place.

Yea. I figured since it is so out of place there must be some significance to the name. If anyone knows, post away...

Going out on a limb here but did Al the Toy Collector from TS2 smoke a cigar?? The only references I could find on the net is that Don Tomas is famous for his cigars.

Just an idea

Is Don Tomas an actual brand name? In other words is Don Tomas sponsoring the food kiosk?

*shrug*

No, as far as I can tell, Don Tomas is not a sponsor. That is the actual name of the kiosk. If you look inside, there are photos on the wall that look like old photos such as a real food stand operation might have had. They kind of look like they're supposed to be family photos of a family that might have operated the stand. They people in the photos look to be Hispanic. I'm guessing that it represents a family operated vending stand that an old seaside park might have had. Being the that building has decorative detailing representing an early vintage Donald Duck, I wonder if the name is a reference to something from an old DD cartoon. The thing that looks out of character with the detailing of the rest of the new architecture on the pier is the font they used for the "Don Tomas" sign. It doesn't look very "period", but, like something straight out of Windows.

A google search for "Don Tomas" and Disney reveals that Don Tomas was a character in the old Zorro show.

I think Zorro was set in old California, but not on a seaside pier. Seems a strange reference, if that's what it is.

I agree that the Don Tomas font and sign looks way too modern.

The stand is nice overall, but with that big modern sign plopped on the top it looks like something from the Irvine Spectrum or Sea World. It doesn't look at all old-fashioned or period specific, unless the period they were going for was 21st Century Irvine Shopping Mall.

All good thoughts but I guess the mystery still remains and would make a good question to pose to an Imagineer. In the mean time it falls into the 'what were they thinking' category. Turkey leg anyone?
