Oh for heaven's sake. Obviously he was tired and said "57" instead of "47." I thought this one was going to go away the nanosecond after it appeared.

(In other words, this is not a funhouse moment for this voter...)<<

Why the big deal when Quayle spelled potato wrong then? Especially since the card he was holding had it mispelled. I just feel Quayle got a bum rap from the media for his honest mistake, but as usual Obama gets another free pass for a mistake he made.

Being a dope isn't the handle that's been attached to Obama. This incident was an anomomaly. Quayle was an intellectual lighweight who couldn't get a break from the media. In the end, no one really cared that the whole "potatoE" issue was due to an inaccurate flash card. It played into the hook.

Obama is very articulate and well educated. There is no particular negative "hook" for him yet, but I am fairly certain that as soon as he actually wrests the nomination from Hillary (and based on what we're hearing today, it may have to be from her cold, dead hands!), you can be sure the media will figure out where the chink in Obama's armor is, and merrily latch on to every obscure incident or moment that plays into it. (Possible choices at this time: unpatriotic or elitist.)

Other notable "hooks" in recent memory:
--Al Gore likes to exaggerate his accomplishments;
--John Kerry is an effete elitist;
--George W. Bush is Quayle II;
--Bob Dole is old and out of touch;
--Hillary is a tough cookie who wears the pants in the family OR Hillary is an emotionless robot programmed to run for political office.

None true, but all were given great mileage in the media (or are being given mileage right now).

McCain will likely get the full "old and out-of-touch" treatment. Although some would like to saddle him with the "easily-loses-his-temper" personna. Obama is busily trying to plant the "Bush II" seeds. Which is a pretty cagey strategy. Again, none of these are true descriptions of the man. But (as in the examples above) it's the way lazy journalists can easily file storie du jour.

Meh, it's clear from the video that he simply meant to say "forty-seven", with an emphasis on Alaska and Hawaii not being part of the continental U.S. and with one state (in the continental U.S.) left to go.

This is not a big deal.

Yes, it's only a big deal when Republicans make gaffs.

The Obama weekly gaffe's continue:

Obama: I had an uncle who was one of the -- who was part of the first American troops to go into Auschwitz and liberate the concentration camps. And the story in our family was is that when he came home, he just went up into the attic and he didnt leave the house for six months. Right, now, obviously, something had really affected him deeply. But at that time, there just werent the kinds of facilities to help somebody work through that kind of pain. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v...sxq8mqvA

His uncle served in WWII and should be commended for his brave serivce.

However...... Auschwitz Was Liberated By The Red Army On January 27, 1945. Soviet troops liberated the Auschwitz concentration camp complex, where they discovered some 7,000 prisoners, including young children, who had not been evacuated by the SS. http://www.ushmm.org/museum/ex...beration

>>On this Memorial Day, as our nation honors its unbroken line of fallen heroes -- and I see many of them in the audience here today -- our sense of patriotism is particularly strong.<<
