Topic: What, exactly, is a "runny egg"?

I ran into some confusion recently when my wife asked me what a "runny egg" was.

At first, I explained that it meant an undercooked white part...but she said she thought it meant the yolk was runny.

Trying to find the exact answer on google, I'm stumped. Can't find it.

Can anyone tell me EXACTLY what a runny egg means?

Personally, I see it as an undercooked white part (so a perfect "over easy" egg would have the white part cooked through, and the yolk still liquid...if I'm thinking of this properly).

To me a runny egg is fully cooked white, but soft yolk.

My favorite in my house is a "Beaten Egg"!!!

What's that? Scrambled?

I figure a fully cooked white with a soft yolk is your regular "over easy" no?

That's pretty much how I *want* my eggs usually.

But "runny eggs" has a negative connotation that I guess I'm just not quite getting.

I guess it IS a runny egg in the yolk is running.

So what is an egg with an undercooked white part, then?

<<I figure a fully cooked white with a soft yolk is your regular "over easy" no?>>

Now, I'm no "Egg Head" (LOL! I'm funny!) but I'm pretty sure "over easy" is soft white and runny yolk. I think "over medium" is the cooked white and runny yolk. At least when I order my eggs "over medium" at a resturant they always arrive cooked whites/runny yolks. (It sounds so gross... and yet... its so good.)

I think runny egg means VERY runny yolk. Usually with an over easy egg (my favorite too) the yolk has begun to set very slightly and is warm.

I've had under-cooked over easy eggs where the yolk was almost the consistency of water and was not even warm. YUK!!

"Beaten Egg" in my house is basically a plain omelette.

We don't really have the same egg ordering system here in the UK. It's pretty much fried or scrambled.

In my house growing up we had "Sunny-side Up" or "Beaten" for fried eggs!!!

We called eggs that were over easy, dippy eggs, because you dipped your toast in the runny yolk. yum.

We were very poor in our house. If my brother hadn't been able to open cans with his teeth we'd never have eaten at all!
:)

I think Sunny-Side Up probably was flipped in our house!!!
