<<The best way to understand a crucial reason why DCA didn't turn out better is to watch early episodes of each season of "American Idol." Observe the variety of truly tone-deaf contestants, fully confident in and even egotistical about their talents, storm off in a huff -- some cursing and giving the finger to the camera -- when they're told they can't sing.

Executives at the DisCo like Barry Braverman and Michael Eisner were equivalent to such "singers," totally tone deaf when it came to judging the quality of their work on a Disney theme park.>>

This is an EXCELLENT example and gives an insight to some of the creative issues within WDI. But the issues there are: WHO screens their "talent", and WHO ALLOWS those that get through to remain when their lack of talent becomes evident?

If you only knew why some 'talents' (or talentless) are where they are you might realize why the culture of WDI has been so poisonous.

I thought things would change dramatically with John Lasseter, but while there's been some positive change, it's still not enough.

The place needs a good housecleaning.

From what I can tell John Lassiter is part of the problem.

<<From what I can tell John Lassiter is part of the problem.>>

Up to this point, he is but a very small voice that really isn't listened to. Promises of creative power were made to him, but they appear to be empty promises.

Also, I have a feeling that he is so busy with the Film divisions, that things like DCA plans are really nothing more than a few bullet points within his morning emails.

However, he may be just a sleeping giant.

^^Thanks for the info. Assuming what you say is true I'm curious to see where how his influence will be felt at the parks in the coming years, if at all.

^^^ and it could be, too, that his considerable direct involvement in WDI was nothing more than gaseous emissions (or wishful thinking, if you prefer) from Al Lutz and other internet pundits. Maybe he never really was supposed to have as active a role as has been claimed online. Imagineers who transitioned from the studios to practically full time status at WDI, like John Hench, Marc Davis, and at times even Ward Kimball... those folks had direct daily involvement. It's impossible for Lasseter to put in that kind of time at WDI and still be completely active with Pixar, and now Feature Animation.

<<. . .I'm curious to see where how his influence will be felt at the parks in the coming years, if at all.>>

I believe he will be much more involved with WDI once other areas straighten out for him. I also have a hunch that he is currently thinking in terms of strategic planning for the future of the Parks.

He's a sleeping giant who will walk in with 10,000 pounds of drawings one day and slam them down on a conference table somewhere in Glendale and simply say: "Me want!"

Who's going to argue?

John is a sleeping giant. But he has plenty of influence even now.

It just increases with every huge Pixar hit, so go out and see WALL*E early and often if you want to see better parks (seriously).

My 'issue' with John is that he seems perfectly content to just focus his WDI energies on Anaheim when WDW needs desperate attention ... DLP could use 2-3 new major attractions ... and HKDL ... well that could use anything!

>>>My 'issue' with John is that he seems perfectly content to just focus his WDI energies on Anaheim when WDW needs desperate attention ...<<<

Since 1994 (the point after Indiana Jones debuted at Disneyland, and Paul Pressler took over and the dark period began), Disneyland has received NOT ONE single "unique" new E Ticket. Notables it has received since then are New Tomorrowland (fiasco), new Space Mountain (rebuild), Buzz Lighyear (clone), Nemo Subs (rebuild), and, oh yeah... DCA next door (nuff said).

During that same time, WDW has received Animal Kingdom (spectacularly beautiful and detailed), Test Track (cutting edge and it's still there, as opposed to Rocket Rods), Rock'n Roller Coaster (a coaster with an actual THEME, as opposed to DCA's Screamin') Mission Space (cutting edge and totally unique), Action Motors stunt show (big and showy), Expedition Everest (spectacular, best mountain built since Splash Mountain), Philharmagic (new and unique as opposed to the three stale old ripoff cloned 3D movie attractions that the DLR got), and new monorails that actually FUNCTION!

Now, I know that some may argue that there are individual parts of DCA (like Soarin') that are totally top notch and... oh wait. WDW got one of those, too.

Oh and, oh yeah... let's not forget that the company made more effort in turning Disneyland's 50th anniversary celebration into a WDW event worldwide than it did a Disneyland event. And let's also not forget that the worldwide celebration of the 100th anniversary of Walt Disney's birth was centered at WDW, and in fact, at the Disney/MGM Studios Park - a park that Walt never even had an inkling of, much less ever set foot in. While at Disneyland, the only thing they did to commemorate the occasion was stick a piano out in the hub and have Richard Sherman play some tunes for half an hour while Cynthia Harriss stood by like some sort of corporate torch singer.

Hmmm... overall, I still think that Disneyland has gotten the short end of the stick (or the shaft, if you prefer), and still has a LONG way to go before I would say that it has received its due. If Lasseter paying more of his attention to Disneyland is what it takes to finally see some PARITY at the DLR, then I say bring it on.

There are serious issues on both coasts. Since DLs 50th, DL is in much better shape than WDW. But right now WDW is the ghetto parks in America. DCA withstanding and there is a plan for that. What's the plan for the MK. MK hasn't had an e-ticket in 18 years. Clone or otherwise. And the parades. They are simply painful to watch. If given my choice, I would chose DLR now. WDW is really sad.
