Box office wise that is. The film which cost 200 million to make opened last weekend to a disappointing 56 million. It was tracking at 80 million where the original opened to 65 million. Then with the holiday weekend it was supposed to suffer a small drop instead it fell 58% to 23 million putting it's total at 94 million. It will probably only make about 50 million more from this point on, not good for Disney.

I wouldn't call it a flop, more like a disapointment, it should make enough to pull a profit Worldwide.

Now Speed Racer on the other hand, that is a huge flop....

My husband and daughter went to see it on Friday while I was at work. I told them I didn't mind. "Prince Caspian" is my favorite book of the series but I just don't really care that much about the movie. I know I've seen a few tv ads about it but I honestly can't remember one thing about them.

My daughter's view of the movie was that it was that it was "okay" and "it was almost all fighting".

How can it be considered a flop when it was the #1 movie?

It also had to compete with Speed Racer, Iron Man, and this weekend, Indy.

We saw it last night, instead of Indy, and it was good! My 6 year old loved it, and was able to stay awake. I don't think she would have during Indy, especially since we saw it at the drive in.

The Caspian side was pretty empty, though, but it's also been at the drive in for 2 weeks, and was playing with College Road Trip.

Numbers really don't mean anything...especially with matinee prices, and places like the drive in which charge only $1 for kids. It's part of a series, which means that once it comes out on DVD, many people who bought the 1st one will buy the second to complete the collection. And also, people like me, who have never seen the first, will probably buy the first, and go back to the theater to see the 2nd to get the full effect.

As I have already said elsewhere on Narnia threads the real story will be its international performance - and that is already way ahead of the first movie despite Prince Caspian not unspooling in most territories until next month.

From variety.com:

"The frame also saw Disney's "The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian" continue generating decent biz early in its foreign run with $18 million at 3,360 from 13 markets. Japan -- the only major market without a "Crystal Skull" opening -- led the way with a first-place launch weekend of $7.7 million at 320 as it outgrossed the next four films.

"Caspian," which will expand gradually offshore over the next two months, has already cumed $49 million internationally with grosses 15% ahead of the original "The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe" in the same territories. Mexico led the holdover markets for "Caspian" with $3.1 million, down 50%; Russia with $2.4 million and South Korea with $1.9 million.

"Caspian" also played well in India -- where "Crystal Skull" opens next weekend -- with $820,000 to boost its two-week cume to $4.1 million, 70% higher than the entire run of the original."

ORDDU: Dar, are you one of those ducklings out there who often sees a glass of water half empty instead of half full?

ORWEN: I rememeber when ENCHANTED first came out and some sour pusses were saying it was a flop, too.

ORDDU: These days, unless something is an instant 'mega hit', some interpret this to mean it was a failure. But that's a GROSS misinterpretation. My sisters and I agree with what leemac just pointed out. PRINCE CASPIAN is doing fine business and still hasn't been out long enough to fully prove itself yet.

ORGOCH: Got tickets, Dar?

We went to the movie theater and started to watch Prince Caspian. It looked like a really good movie but AJ didn't like it much. He started singing about 20 mins into the movie and we couldn't get him to be quiet. After a bunch of mean looks we had to leave the theater. That was a $14 dollar mistake we will not make again. I guess the Elderp Clan is grounded from going to the movies for awhile.

Oh and I should emphasize he wasn't crying just singing. I don't know what exactly he was singing but he seemed quite please with his little tune.

Witches actually I saw the film last weekend and really liked it. The guy who played Caspian was a little shaky for me, but other than that it was a good. But so far the domestic grosses have been disappointing. This was expected by many to make 300 million and it might not even reach 200 million. And yes if you count foreign and dvd grosses it will turn a profit.

But there's been talk of Disney ending the series after Voyage of the Dawn Treader. That film is scheduled to open around May 10 of 2010 but guess what comes the week before, the Iron Man sequel. That might give the Disney execs a reason to move the film. Quite frankly this should have been released during the Holidays.

Probably should have but didn't they have a different movie scheduled for November.
