That is truly a shock, he was responsible for some truly great films.

"Tootsie" always brings a smile.
Thanks for the great movies, Mr. Pollack

This is a real shame. What a talented filmmaker and actor.

I saw Tootsie a few weeks ago and it still holds up really well. His favorite movie of mine that he made was Jeremiah Johnson. He won directed Out Of Africa but I can say that I do not like that movie at all. Another good film from him is the Interpreter with Sean Penn and Nicole Kidman.

This news totally broke me this morning. I knew he had been ill for a while but I wasn't aware it was cancer.

He was a truly remarkable man - his directing biography isn't very long but did include such classics as Tootsie, Out of Africa and The Way We Were but his producing credits are huge - just looking at the Miramax/Mirage stuff like Cold Mountain, The Quiet American, Iris, The Talented Mr. Ripley and Sense & Sensibility shows he had a great knack for developing literary stories. His partnership with the late Anthony Minghella was pure magic.

I'll also miss his acting - not just in his own movies but also in other product. I always thought his role as Will Truman's dad George was fantastic (especially opposite Blythe Danner as his wife). He had great comic timing.

I recently caught up with his last directing gig on DVD - Sketches of Frank Gehry which was an amazing documentary about the architect. He manages to coax Gehry's ego out whilst still showing the man to be a design genius. The opening sequence is exquisite too.
