<Sure, gotta denigrate somehow, but he's not lying in his book, is he?>

I'm not sure if he's lying, but I think he's mostly wrong.

<If by "honest" you mean "spews blatant propaganda", then yes, Tony Snow is as "honest" as the day is long.>

Plenty of liberals here "spew blatant propaganda". Are they not honest? In fact, you've done it yourself.

"I'm not sure if he's lying, but I think he's mostly wrong."

Of course you do Douglas. I would expect no less.

"Plenty of liberals here "spew blatant propaganda". Are they not honest? In fact, you've done it yourself."

The obvious dif is we are nobodies voicing our opinion on a Disney fansite. Mr. Snowjob is the mouthpiece for a dangerously arrogant leadership of a global superpower.

>>but I think he's mostly wrong<<

Based on what? Did you have the same access he did at the White House? What, specifically, do you dispute?

>>This isn't first time we've gotten a tell all book from a former White House staffer. Clinton, Bush I and Reagan had "tell all" books written about them<<

This isn't even the first from an ex-Bush official:

Larry Diamond (Coalition Provisional Authority adviser), "Squandered Victory: The American Occupation and the Bungled Effort to Bring Democracy to Iraq"

Douglas Feith (Undersecretary of Defense), "War and Decision: Inside the Pentagon at the Dawn of the War on Terrorism"

David Frum (speechwriter), "The Right Man: An Inside Account of the Bush White House"

Richard Clarke (National Security Council special adviser), "Against All Enemies: Inside America's War on Terror"

Michael Scheuer (CIA analyst in bin Laden unit), "Imperial Hubris: Why the West is Losing the War on Terror"

L. Paul Bremer III (head of the Coalition Provisional Authority), "My Year in Iraq: The Struggle to Build a Future of Hope"

Ari Fleischer (press secretary), "Taking Heat: The President, the Press, and My Years in the White House"

Valerie Plame (CIA officer), "Fair Game: My Life as a Spy, My Betrayal by the White House"

Ron Christie (USA Freedom Corps director), " Black in the White House: Life Inside George W. Bush's West Wing"

Many of those books really were self-serving and were essentially "you know how screwed up things are? Not MY fault" books. Bremer's being probably the most egregious example.

McClellan at least takes himself to task somewhat for not speaking up when he should have. And yes, it's interesting that the White House spokespersons (and Rove, and Doug - have those two ever been photographed together??) can't tackle the book on substance, so they go after McClellan personally.

<<Tony Snow was a great liar - he looked really comfortable (even smug) doing so.>>

<Tony Snow is a good, honest man.>

What's the emoticon for a spit take?

<That he was too smart to fall into the traps that some liberal reporters kept trying to lay for him really irked them.>

He wasn't as smart as he thought he was, but then he had poor material to work with.

<McClellan is not as bright.>

I think he simply has a conscience.

I love the notion of 'why didn't he speak up then?'

You think Bush and his cronies cared what McClellan had to say about any issue beyond 'Yes, sir.'?

I don't.

Watching what these guys did to those that opposed them like Joe Wilson may have been a deterant. Plus, It wasn't his job to "speak up". How many of you go to your boss and tell them how to run the country..er, I mean, their company.

Those who have seen the book seem to be saying there really isn't much of anything new in it. McClellen spends much time in hand wringing anguish, but when it comes to actually delivering the red meat that either side wants, he does just what a good spokesman does. Here's an example from today's LA Times:
>>I still like and admire George W. Bush. I consider him a fundamentally decent person, and I do not believe he or his White House deliberately or consciously sought to deceive the American people. But he and his advisors confused the propaganda campaign with the high level of candor and honesty so fundamentally needed to build and then susatin public support during a time of war.<<

McClellan also blames the media (surprise!), the "culture of Washington," and Karl Rove for what went wrong. Now there's a bold set of targets.

I am astonished and depressed that we are going to get yet another pointless round of accusations concerning the Valerie Plame affair. Folks, there's no mystery here. Richard Armitage has been identified, and has admitted, that he was the leak. Anyone in the White House who spoke to reporters did so after the fact. That Libby got caught in lies (which he did) had nothing to do with the actual leak, but with his own perceptions. I will be interested to see the full extent of McClellan's spin in this one, since so far we have only excerpts in which he basically claims he was misled.

McClellan may have been motivated by a deep desire to do the right thing. That he waited two years, and only after having penned a book and cut a deal is, I suppose, his right. But it is telling that as the contents were leaked, and he was asked by reporters to discuss the revelations, his response was to turn them away, expalining he had an exclusive interview lined up with a morning news broadcast...
