>>But at best a press secretary spins and stretches the truth and makes his boss look as good as possible always - that's his job.<<

<But should that be the job description?>

Probably not. But that's what it's become, certainly from the last half of the 20th century on; I'm less familiar with what the job entailed prior to the television age.

<I don't like the idea that there is a whole lot of government going on in secret and manufacturing deception and spin.>

Neither do I. My guess is that those doing it don't even see it that way. They see it as "best communicating our message" or "cutting through the media and getting the truth out" or some such.

>>Keep in mind, too, that this White House planted a ringer amongst the press corps. So their concern with truth is suspect at best.<<

Once again, despite efforts by some to portray this administration as the same as previous administrations, this group goes beyond past efforts to "push the envelope."

We now know that Dick Cheney's office leaked information to the New York Times about Saddam's pursuit of WMDs. Then after the Times reports on it, Cheney goes on Meet the Press and says, "Just this past week the New York Times had an article on Saddam's pursuit of WMDs." Wow! You don't say, Dick!

And yet, despite this kind of coordinated effort at getting information they want in front of the public, we're supposed to believe that the entire Plame Affair was just Dick Armitage leaking her name, independent and without the knowledge of Rove or anyone else. Sure.

There may actually be another reasons some conservatives insist on pushing the "Armitage Only" falsehood regarding Plame. Dick Armitage has been willing to be interviewed for things like the Frontline documentary on the Iraq War and also for the superb doc, "No End in Sight." In what appears to be an attempt at repentance, Armitage has been very forthright about what happened in these interviews and, while not directly criticizing administration officials, he's provided a lot of information that puts them in a less-than flattering light. And, unlike Rove and others, he's also come clean about his involvement in the Plame Affair. No wonder there's such a desire to discredit him.
