<<< Boy, TDR sure seems to be taking a beating here. I feel like I owe it to a certain former poster to stand up for it!>>>

I had this discussion with TDLFAN in the past and he too totally ignored the situation and few in the WDW card. Don't get me wrong WDW does have its issues and clearly Spirit of 74 you are not shy in sharing them online, and a thank you for offering an alternative view. But this topic involves TDR and we should judge TDR on its own merits as we would do with WDW, DLRP or any other Resort.

I am certain you will have an amazing visiting TDR anyway. Its an amazing destination and I'm sure TDS will blow you away. But bare in mind when you are enjoying the 25th Anniversary that this Resort use to do it a lot better.

Regarding noticing who the Asian tourist are at TDR, I have never really noticed, but if your Japanese its probarely a lot easier to spot, due to the differnt cultures. It was very easy to know during my last trip to Hong Kong who was a local and who was a tourist. I found without meaning to sound to rude that Chinese Mainland guest were constantly rude and would push in, had no manners and had a strange smell to them. Hong Kong locals were a lot more polite and hygenic in my observations, I'm afraid to say.

Also, Malin, you've been there many times before right? To TDR, I mean. So, the reasons to go back to TDR are not as great since you've been recently. Somebody like Spirit, who's never been, is going to be excited by it and not see why anybody wouldn't want to go. It's different for someone who goes to the resort often enough to have seen the latest offerings and not want to spend the money for just a few entertainment options.

Thats very true gurgitoy2, and I would certainly not want to put anyone off visiting. Having already visited a few times the desire to want to go back so soon has kind of gone. Reason why I'm heading off to WDW later this year as there are now several new attractions and shows I have yet to see since my last trip. I guess I am just guilty of visiting TDR too many times and now not apreciating it enough, like many Annual Passholders often do when it comes to WDW or DLR. Its so easy to take things for granted. Once the cheap decorations come down I'm sure I will feel another trip is worth the airfare, providing there are no more serious Earthquakes.

Oh, that's what I'm here for, no thanks needed! ;-)

<<But this topic involves TDR and we should judge TDR on its own merits as we would do with WDW, DLRP or any other Resort.>>

That's only true to a certain extent. We're all Disney lovers and most of us have been to at least two Disney destinations. As I said, I've been an APer at all of the non-Asian parks -- and at WDW since 1982!

Comparisons are only natural.

But, yeah, the resorts should be judged on their own merits. That's why I'll be going to HKDL as well this fall and judging that place on how it makes me feel as well as more tangible, objective criteria.

<<I am certain you will have an amazing visiting TDR anyway. Its an amazing destination and I'm sure TDS will blow you away. But bare in mind when you are enjoying the 25th Anniversary that this Resort use to do it a lot better.>>

I'm sure I will.

I also don't doubt the accuracy of your point for one second. I'm quite sure the OLC has sadly given in to some of the WalMarting/dumbing down that has happened to the US and European parks.

And I won't give OLC a pass anymore than I give TWDC a pass for what it has done with its parks!

Airfare has gotten really expensive. When we went last May we found relatively cheap airfare (for Japan anyway), and now I can't find tickets for anywhere near what we paid before.

I would visit TDR in a heartbeat, but the price of jet fuel is just kicking my butt.

Ha ha... I'm not even going to step into the Asian debate. Just want to say though, that it can be hard to tell for certain who is whom until you hear someone start speaking and can tell from their language where they come from.

Not even clothing is a very accurate measure, because many of the kids in HK and Taiwan, for example, like to dress like the Japanese kids... so it's easy to make a completely wrong guess about their background.

I think the OP's of this debate have already settled this issue, though.

Well, I just got back from TDL a few minutes ago and had a great time (as always)...

The 25th anniversary offerings, on second viewing, seemed even lamer and more disappointing though. Just not much to it. What a bummer!

HOWEVER, I was reminded as I so often am why there is ALWAYS a compelling reason to visit the resort no matter WHAT is going on events-wise.

The incredible, I just wanna give em all a hug and a thank you, enthusiastic, oh-so-Disney spirit and then some CAST MEMBERS who today, as usual, out shined all the rest in all the other resorts just with their simple enthusiasm, helpfulness, friendly smiles, and infectious enjoyment of just being in DISNEYLAND (Tokyo lol).

And I'm well aware that, though such a thing may seem "easy", it takes a very dedicated person to put on that smile and MEAN it (or else be an incredible actor lol), and just throw 100% into their job and make the most of it and help all the guests have just a fantastic, Disney day (which we most definitely did).

I've often talked about how great Japanese customer service is all around, but today reminded me of just how much of a notch up TDR is from the rest even here (I would equate "regular" Japanese customer service to Disney in America fwiw...and that's no insult!).

Don't know why today stood out more than most, but it did. Just every single cast member I encountered was great. And I didn't even chat with many of them (just a few that I knew from back when I worked there), but every one of them was all smiles and waves and making it a special day for everyone who was there.

So, there's your compelling reason. ;)

***I'm quite sure the OLC has sadly given in to some of the WalMarting/dumbing down that has happened to the US and European parks.***

Based on my experience today, I wouldn't say that.

The 25th offerings were disappointing, that much is still true.

But aside from that my Disney day circa 2008 was just as fantastic and special as my first visit to TDL back in 1998.

Sadly, I can't say the same in terms of comparing my first visits to WDW and Disneyland to the present day (WDW in particular, since Disneyland gained a whole lot of ground with their spruce up prior to the 50th but it still wasn't quite as up to par in comparison to my first visit).

By the dumbing down of TDL you are no doubt referring to the inclusion of Stitch in the Tiki Room, and Monsters Inc. in Tomorrowland, and thinks of that nature?

While I would scream bloody murder if they ever did those things at Disneyland (I did when Nemo was built), I really don't mind that it's happening at Tokyo Disneyland.

First of all, Tokyo Disneyland isn't the original. Walt didn't walk through it, so there's no real sense of emotional attachment. It's a fine looking park and impeccably maintained. But if they got rid of a certain ride like Small World for a Pixar ride I would just say, "Oh that's dumb." but I wouldn't pop a vein over it.

The second reason is because DisneySea is nearby. The two parks offer totally separate experiences. TDS downplays characters and magic and fantasy for adventure and exploration and myths and legends. As long as there's no intrusion of characters in TDS they can do whatever they want to TDL.

And even if Monsters Inc. doesn't belong in Tomorrowland, they are throwing gobs of money at it so that it'll still be a spectacular attraction. Also, their Tomorrowland sucks anyway.
