1	DAR Wed 6/18/2008 8:33a	ANIMATION 1. "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs," 1937.-It's the first and is really good but I would switch it with number 2 2. "Pinocchio," 1940.-Best animated film ever. 3. "Bambi," 1942.-Beautiful to look at 4. "The Lion King," 1994.-Yes it's popular but it's really good and worth of it's success. 5. "Fantasia," 1940.-A great film that introduced great music to the masses. 6. "Toy Story," 1995.-Toy Story was the better film but like Snow White it was the first. 7. "Beauty and the Beast," 1991.-1989 to 1994 what a glorious time for Disney 8. "Shrek," 2001.-A good movie. I enjoy it but Iron Giant is much better 9. "Cinderella," 1950.-Marked the first resurgence of Disney animation still a good film 10. "Finding Nemo," 2003.-A wonderful film but don't be surprised if you see Wall-E or Ratatouille in this spot. FANTASY 1. "The Wizard of Oz," 1939.-I like it but I don't love it. 2. "The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring," 2001.-I consider the entire trilogy to be one film. While this is a great film the other two are better. 3. "It's a Wonderful Life," 1946.-I only saw it once thought it was good but not life changing or anything 4. "King Kong," 1933.-Yeah this movie really is good 5. "Miracle on 34th Street, 1947.-Love this film. 6. "Field of Dreams," 1989.-Great film and one the films for a guy where crying is okay. 7. "Harvey," 1950.-Never seen it 8. "Groundhog Day," 1993.-Hate this film with a passion 9. "The Thief of Bagdad," 1924.-Haven't seen it though I hear the 1940 version is just as good if not better. But I think that wasn't an American production. 10. "Big," 1988.-My favorite Tom Hanks performance. The movie succeeds because of him GANGSTER 1. "The Godfather," 1972.-A great film for sure. 2. "Goodfellas," 1990.-Best film ever. 3. "The Godfather Part II," 1974.-The first is still better but there's some strong stuff. 4. "White Heat," 1949.-Cagney's best performance, one of those essential "guy" films. 5. "Bonnie and Clyde," 1967.-I have the dvd at home but I've never seen it. Sort of bought in one of those 3 for 2 deals. 6. "Scarface: The Shame of a Nation," 1932.-Never seen it. 7. "Pulp Fiction," 1994.-Great film, great dialogue. 8. "The Public Enemy," 1931.-Never seen it. 9. "Little Caesar," 1930.-Never seen it. 10. "Scarface," 1983.-Unintentionally funny SCIENCE FICTION 1. "2001: A Space Odyssey," 1968.-Never seen it 2. "Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope," 1977.-See Toy Story and Snow White ahem Empire Strikes Back 3. "E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial," 1982.-Really you have no heart if you don't like this film. 4. "A Clockwork Orange," 1971.-Strange, bizzare and quite good. 5. "The Day The Earth Stood Still," 1951.-Love this movie holds up quite well. 6. "Blade Runner," 1982.-A film that gets better with each viewing. 7. "Alien," 1979.-Scary as heck 8. "Terminator 2: Judgment Day," 1991.-An action classic. Arnold has never been better. 9. "Invasion of the Body Snatchers," 1956.-Never seen it. 10. "Back to the Future," 1985.-Glad to see this on here. I might have seen it 10 times in 1985. WESTERN 1. "The Searchers," 1956.-Never seen it but arriving in my netflix queue 2. "High Noon," 1952.Never seen it 3. "Shane," 1953.-Never seen it 4. "Unforgiven," 1992.-Love it but of the Clint westerns I'd rank them Outlaw Josey Wales, Good Bad and Ugly(which is Italian)then Unforgiven. 5. "Red River," 1948.-Never seen it 6. "The Wild Bunch," 1969.-Saw it. Still pretty bloody good action film. 7. "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid," 1969.-Never seen it 8. "McCabe & Mrs. Miller," 1971.-Never seen it. 9. "Stagecoach," 1939.-Never seen it. 10. "Cat Ballou," 1965.-Never seen it Sidenote: Most of these films are on my netflix queue. And my two personal choices to be on this list, the aformentioned Josey Wales and Tombstone. SPORTS 1. "Raging Bull," 1980.-It's a good movie but I don't think anything special. 2. "Rocky," 1976.-Love this but my personal favorite is Rocky IV, the best bad movie ever. 3. "The Pride of the Yankees," 1942.-Never seen it but again on the netflix 4. "Hoosiers," 1986.-Best sports movie ever. 5. "Bull Durham," 1988.-Probably the most realistic look at baseball. 6. "The Hustler," 1961.-Never seen it 7. "Caddyshack," 1980.-I saw this at midnight showing with a crowd a few years back. One of the best times in a theatre. And very quotable. 8. "Breaking Away," 1979.-Saw it once, need to see it again. 9. "National Velvet," 1944.-Never seen it. 10. "Jerry Maguire," 1996.-The perfect date movie. Sports for the guys. Romance for the girls everyone wins. MYSTERY 1. "Vertigo," 1958.-Flip with Rear Window 2. "Chinatown," 1974.-Never seen it 3. "Rear Window," 1954.-See 1 4. "Laura," 1944.-Never seen 5. "The Third Man," 1949.-Never seen 6. "The Maltese Falcon," 1941.-Never seen 7. "North By Northwest," 1959.-A great chase film 8. "Blue Velvet," 1986.-Never liked it 9. "Dial M for Murder," 1954.-Never seen it. 10. "The Usual Suspects," 1995.-Love this film. ROMANTIC COMEDY 1. "City Lights," 1931.-Never seen not a fan of Chaplin really. 2. "Annie Hall," 1977.-Hate hate hate Woody Allen films 3. "It Happened One Night," 1934.-Never seen 4. "Roman Holiday," 1953.-Never seen 5. "The Philadelphia Story," 1940.-Guess what never seen. 6. "When Harry Met Sally ...," 1989.-Good movie with a classic scene. 7. "Adam's Rib," 1949.-Never seen 8. "Moonstruck," 1987.-An okay movie 9. "Harold and Maude," 1971.-Bizzare but likeable 10. "Sleepless in Seattle," 1993.-Cute movie COURTROOM DRAMA 1. "To Kill a Mockingbird," 1962.-Great 2. "12 Angry Men," 1957.-Great 3. "Kramer Vs. Kramer," 1979.-Never seen 4. "The Verdict," 1982.-Never seen 5. "A Few Good Men," 1992.-Good but a little overrated, notable for "You can't handle the truth>" 6. "Witness for the Prosecution," 1957.-Never seen(same for 7-9) 7. "Anatomy of a Murder," 1959. 8. "In Cold Blood," 1967. 9. "A Cry in the Dark," 1988. 10. "Judgment at Nuremberg," 1961.-Great great film. EPIC 1. "Lawrence of Arabia," 1962.-One of my goals before I shuffle off this planet is to see this film in a theatre in its full 70 mm glory. 2. "Ben-Hur," 1959. 3. "Schindler's List," 1993.-One of those films that while great I can only watch once. 4. "Gone With the Wind," 1939.-I've tried to watch this several times and just can't get into it. 5. "Spartacus," 1960.-Never seen it but I need to see it. 6. "Titanic," 1997.-First half is kind of dreadful but once the iceberg hits it takes off. 7. "All Quiet on the Western Front," 1930.-Never seen it. 8. "Saving Private Ryan," 1998.-Great beginning and end, kind of a spotty middle. 9. "Reds," 1981.-Never seen it. 10. "The Ten Commandments," 1956.-Worth just for Edward G Robinson saying "Yeah Moses where's you're God now see." And excuse me but where is the action genre on this list(unless I missed it)? But here's ten that should have been on there. 1. Raiders of the Lost Ark 2. Die Hard 3. Dirty Harry 4. The Dirty Dozen 5. The Adventures of Robin Hood 6. The Fugtive 7. Bullit 8. Lethal Weapon 9. True Lies 10. 48 Hours
2	christiemarsh88 Wed 6/18/2008 8:55a	Okay--here's my problem with the list: "People think of animation only doing things where people are dancing around and doing a lot of histrionics, but animation is not a genre. And people keep saying, "The animation genre." It's not a genre! A Western is a genre! Animation is an art form, and it can do any genre. You know, it can do a detective film, a cowboy film, a horror film, an R-rated film or a kids' fairy tale. But it doesn't do one thing. And, next time I hear, "What's it like working in the animation genre?" I'm going to punch that person!" That quote is from Mr. Brad Bird, and I couldn't agree more. "City Lights" is listed under Romantic Comedy: they didn't make a Silent Movie genre, so why should they make an Animation genre category? Just doesn't make any sense to me.
3	RockyMtnMinnie Wed 6/18/2008 8:59a	I watched this last night and have a bunch of movies that we need to see. I have no heart; ET bugs the heck out of me.;) I believe that Gone With the Wind is THE Epic movie. I was wondering what happened to the Horror genre. They're missing some great films.

5	christiemarsh88 Wed 6/18/2008 9:18a	Yeah! I can see there not being any action category--those movies could fall under Gangster, Epic, Wester, etc. I suppose. But there are no horror movies represented! There are just so many classic movies that they missed out on because of their odd genre choices. Action Drama Comedy Horror Western Mystery Sports Science Fiction/Fantasy Epic If they had gone with these 10 genres, which are more widely considered to be definitive, they could have included a lot more movies. In the list they had, where would a movie like Casablanca go? Widely regarded as one of the best films of all time, how is it possible that it doesn't fit into any of the 10 genres the AFI chose to list? There are tons of other movies like this. In the AFI's own 100 years 100 movies list, out of their top 10 films of all time, only 5 appear on this new list. The other 5 don't even fit into any of the genres they chose.
6	TXDISNEYNERD Wed 6/18/2008 9:18a	I watch some of this night and enjoyed it, but then Hell's Kitchen came on and well.... thanks DAR for filling me in on what I missed. Generally, my favorite type of movie is romantic comedies and of the ones listed, I have only seen 3 of them. (#6, #8, & #10) Are these others worth seeing?

8	jasmine7 Wed 6/18/2008 9:21a	I watched it last night, and while I enjoyed it, it didn't hold my attention as well as previous AFI lists. I was very disappointed that they left out the musical genre. I thought for sure they'd include it, but nope.
9	TXDISNEYNERD Wed 6/18/2008 10:09a	I too was disappointed about no musical category. Here is my list of top 5 musicals. I am sure I missed a few good ones. 1. Sound of Music 2. My Fair Lady 3. Singing in the rain 4. Moulan Rouge (sp?) 5. Hairspray
10	Dabob2 Wed 6/18/2008 10:49a	Yeah, the categories were weird. "Romantic Comedy" but no plain comedy?? Think of the scads of great comedies where romance wasn't that important. And no musical category? Musicals were Hollywood's bread and butter for decades. Leaving out horror was dumb too. "War movies" would have been a better category than "Gangster." Sure, there are great gangster films, but there are probably more great films that fit the war category: Casablanca, Paths of Glory, Bridge on the River Kwai, MASH, The Best Years of our Lives (okay, that was post-war, but still)... They couldn't even find a spot for Citizen Kane. Lastly, any list of comedies (including romantic comedies) that doesn't include His Girl Friday is just wrong. To rank fun but insubstantial flicks like Sleepless in Seattle and When Harry Met Sally above HGF is just plain wrong! :)
