We are taking my niece to WDW next summer for her 12th birthday. Right now we are planning on going as soon as she gets out of school. But now I'm wondering if that is the best idea as lots of other people might have the same idea. Since we have to go in the summer is there a time that is better than others or does it matter?

When is out of school for her? Parts of the country (like me)are in school until the end of June. If she gets out much earlier it might not be too bad.

I've gone twice in June and once in July. June was less crowded than July. We went last year the 3rd week of July. It was so packed. We could hardly push our stroller through. We got hit and pushed so many times. And there seemed to be alot of line cutting. We just went June 10-17 and it was not that bad, even with Srar Wars Weekend. We got to HS early for Star Wars Weekend. The Star wars store was empty when we got there. The longest ride wait was 70 min. for Toy Story Mania. We mostly do fast passes but most rides were only 20 min. wait. It was fun. I won't go in July again. June was much better for us. We left as soon as kids were out of school.

FWIW, our kids were out of school on May 29th. I'm in Northern CA.

I went this year on June 6th. Things were great until about the 9th or 10th and then they started to get a bit crowded (ok, wretched), but by then I had already done most of Animal Kingdom, EPCOT, and Hollywood Studios. (As a central California girl and previous annual pass holder for Disneyland, didn't feel that Magic Kingdom was a priority.) Of course, I had the advantage of extra park hours and being a single decisive adult who can move quickly and packs lightly. So in my eight days I managed to do all 4 theme parks and both water parks. I even managed to do 4 behind-the-scenes-type tours and part of Star Wars Weekend. (Still a bit kerflumoxed as to how, but maybe God did answer all those prayers about slowing time...)

If your neice gets out the end of May, I say go for it. If she gets out 2nd week in June, I say beg parents for an opportunity to get sick during the school year. (Yes, as a teacher I should be absolutely ashamed for suggesting such a thing--however, somethings only happen once or twice in a life time.)

Also, as a twelve year old (unless you're truly blessed), she will have definite ideas about what is "lame" and "for babies". (Did I mention I taught junior high--I am sadly amazed at the loss of magic that some of my students live with. If I win the lottery, class trip to Disneyland so they can get some of it back!!)

Either way I hope you have a spectacular time and if you ever want to adopt a semi-crazy algebra/history teacher, I'll go whenever you want!! (Crowds or not)

I took my kids out of school right after memorial day..we had a great time..no lines but, everything was operational..

Take her for her actual b-day it's great!! get a b-day pin @ Town Hall all day the CM will wish her "happy birthday".

Cinderella wished me a happy b-day!! it does NOT get better than that!!

If you must go in the summer, June is absolutely when I'ld go. Not only are crowds less brutal but so is the weather.

Trust me you can tolerate crowds better when it is a little cooler and less humid.

Might I suggest you plan on staying on property. This would give you the advantage of "Extra Magic Hours". You could go to the parks early before it gets as hot or stay late when it starts to cool down.

During the hottest time of the day you could go back to your resort and swim or just rest. Operating hours are later in most of the parks in the summer so this is very doable.

Just remember to pace yourself and stay hydrated. Don't go with the idea you have to see & do everything. Spend lots of time planning with your niece so you get a feel for what she enjoys and it will help you make the most of the time you have.

Have a great time.

I'd definitely go as soon as she gets out of school. July and August at WDW are miserable - it's crowded and it's hot, and people are extra cranky (myself included) when it's especially warm. I'm hoping to take my nephew for a few days next summer and I'm definitely planning to do it as soon as he and I finish school (I'm a teacher too, ellejaye!), which will be at the end of May.

We were there for a week this year May/June and the crowds and weather weren't bad at all. But it was the week before Star Wars weekend, rats.
