As a child growing up at DL, what I loved is I could pretend to be an adult - exploring jungles, going down a mine, caught up in a pirate battle, ghost hunting, sailing on a ship, bobsledding, driving a car, blasting off to Mars, being shrunk down to the size of a molecule. snow white was boring when I was 5 and 25, give me a romanticised reality (that is what I love about Epcot and DAK after all). And it is that romanticised version of reality that I have always loved about a Disney park. adrenelin is ok (but cheap thrills), toons are ok, but I feel like my brains cells are rapidly depleating if I am around them too long.

But sadly folks, us older Disney fans are dying out, and the new audience don't get it. To them, Mountains and Toons are Disney. and for those of us who remember when Disney only had one Mountain and toons lived near to it only, frankly our time has passed. I have sadly reconciled myself to this.

Disney is no longer the visionary firm it once was, it is run by accountants now.

>>Furthermore, the space age theme may have resonated with visitors in the 60's and 70's, but it could be argued that today's more technologically savvy visitors might not be so enamored with a land based solely on Walt Disney's view of futurism. <<

Let me add something here:

While we are in an age of Communications, and Electronics ....

Where's the age of Transportation and Space Travel, and life on other worlds?

While the future is hard to predict .. and Tomorrowland a place ever evolving .. those are rhelms where Disney can tackle.

I'm almost there myself too daveW.

But whereas Tomorrowland is concerned:

Before Tony Baxter retires ... And this one of his last large projects - I sincerely hope he is going to pull out all the stops and wow us with a Tomorrowland that is not just a lazy attempt like WDW and HKDL's is.

Not that Tony is retiring anytime real soon .. but talk of his planned retirement from WDI has been a discussion on this board already.

And also DaveW ....
I still have hope that like so many things in life being cyclable (?spelling?)... a time where the emphasis on innovation becomes the center of attention. Because whether they want to admit it or not ... times change, people change, society becomes more sophisticated .... audiences will react to new interests ... and if people get sick of the heavy inundation with toons .. they'll react with their pocket book .. and then Disney will finally make a change. IF they want to stay in business!

"But THIS IS the original. Whether some people care or not. And if they decide to mess up the theme in other "mk" parks around the world .. at least a person can travel to Anaheim, CA where a better representation of the future is available to them."

But it's too late: Tomorrowland already is messed up, and it's been messed up for about 15-20 years now. Nothing short of a bold rethinking of the area will bring about the kinds of changes that you and I would like to see.

“While the future is hard to predict .. and Tomorrowland a place ever evolving .. those are rhelms where Disney can tackle.”

I don't really disagree with this, but I think that this kind of ambitious thinking has been pushed to the wayside, at least at Disneyland Park. Technology, for the sake of technology, hasn’t been a headlining topic at Disneyland since the late 1980’s.

In fact, looking at Magic Kingdom parks world wide, and observing the tone of Disney's current marketing, the key words seem to be dream, magic, and wonder. While romantic visions of the future can fit under that umbrella, I think that the current philosophy is to try to find avenues for Disney to promote its character brands first. In that regard, I think that Sci Fi City or something beyond the “living blueprint” concept could be, and I emphasize could be, a solution in making that area of the park resonate with today's guests while respectfully acknowledging Walt Disney's original 1950’s vision. In any case, the TDL drawings certainly look much more inspired than anything I’ve ever seen designed for DL’s Tomorrowland.

>>>Why are you yelling? Sci Fi City would be custom and unique because a) every overlay is unique because none of the Tomorrowlands are identical and b) Sci Fi City has never been built.<<<

I'm YELLING because DISNEYLAND NEVER gets more than a wimpified WASHED DOWN version of any concepts that are originally developed for FOREIGN parks when they are ADAPTED to DISNEYLAND!

Discoveryland in Paris was highly developed. Then a version was done for the Magic Kingdom in Florida but it wasn't nearly as thorough because it was an OVERLAY of already existing structures. Then a THIRD ITERATION of the same old crap was done for Anaheim and it was even worse because it wasn't much more than PAINT! THAT'S why I'm YELLING, because I am SICK of that CRAP. And just because it hasn't already been done yet in Tokyo doesn't mean that it won't, and if they do, OLC will spend 3 times as much money there as Disney will spend here and ours will pale in comparison.

>>>And just because the last redo, based on DLP's designs flopped, doesn't mean that some other variation from another park will be a dud too.<<<

If it's for Disneyland, then yes, it certainly does mean that. If you want to see what it takes to make a decent overlay on existing structures, then look to DCA and what is going on at Paradise Pier and the Main Entrance and Sun Court areas. THAT my friend is SERIOUS commitment on the part of Disney, but look at what it is that they need to thoroughly upgrade there at DCA. You can be certain that Disney will not spend that kind of dough on an overlay for Tomorrowland. Therefore, I prefer that they do something custom, unique and one of a kind with the money that they do allocate, as opposed to a knock off of something much more thoroughly realized overseas.

<<oc_dean: I believe I found it Hans:

scroll down a bit to the "Tokyo Disneyland" section:

An Imagineer I know says there was an outstanding model of that Sci-Fi City done. I don’t know if there were ever any pictures of it though. I’d sure like to see some if any former Imagineers have any they’d be willing to share.
