There's not much to the site just yet but Andrew Stanton will be directing his first live action movie based on the Edgar Rice Burroughs Barsoom stories. This is a golden opportunity for me to finally read those stories. |

The use of Peter Gabriel's cover of Arcade Fire's My Body Is A Cage is inspired IMHO - loved it.
I'm pretty excited for this one - there just aren't enough gambles in the sci-fi movie world any more - everything either needs to be an established franchise like Star Trek or a small movie like Sunshine or Moon.
I just hope that Stanton heads back to Emeryville after Carter - losing both Bird and Stanton to live action would be catastrophic for Pixar. |

Ditto.
But be honest here... do you actually believe that they'll return?
I don't. Not for a second.

A kinda cheapie movie company named The Asylum apparently made a DTV version called Princess of Mars.
My question is, how did they get the rights? I thought the Burroughs estate guarded their rights pretty jealously.
Or am I just wrong about that? |

| skinnerbox Mon 12/5/2011 8:10p | The trailer was released a few days ago. I'm surprised no one has mentioned it.
In terms of eye candy, it looks good. But the feeling I get while watching it is similar to how I felt watching the Prince of Persia trailer, with that whole 'princess falling for our outsider hero' hackneyed story line. It also feels too much like the Star Wars prequels, with the look of the Martians and their planet. It's like I've seen the film before, even though that's obviously not true.
As much as I hope for something better than what the trailer is portraying, I have strong doubts about this film charting new territory. Stanton has been an amazing storyteller and director for animation. But not everyone can make the transition to live action successfully. I guess we'll know in about three months.
As for animation directors doing live action... I do have hope for Brad Bird's turn with M:I. I'm not a huge fan of the franchise, but the trailers intrigue me. I think this one might turn out to be the best of the lot so far. I do believe Brad will follow in Burton's footsteps and become a terrific and well-respected live action director. As for Andrew... I'm not feeling as confident. And I honestly don't know why.
