Has anyone else visited Ward?

This was so long ago (and Ward was such a fascinating personality) that I would really be interested in other people's perceptions.

Bob, this is a wonderful article. I can't wait for the rest of it, the longer the better! Ward was truly a treasure. I would have loved to see his trains. Do you have any pictures?

Glad you liked it! (You don't think I'm going into too much detail, do you?)

No, we didn't take any pictures (although I do have one of me & Ward at a Disneyana Convention I might use). I had been told Ward could be difficult on occasion and we didn't know what to expect. So when he said "no interview", we didn't make any other requests.

Bob, the more detail the better. After all, those of us that haven't been there won't have the chance in the future. Add as many details as you can.

I have worked for Disneyworld for 31 years, and got back into Toy Trains in 1998, after having had none since I was a kid in 1960.

In 1981, I was at the Disney Studio in Burbank with my then boss. He suggested that we stop into one of the sound stages as they were running some "dailies" of one of the film segments for the World of Motion attraction at Epcot. I was introduced to a man I had sadly never heard of, who treated me like I was somebody; Ward Kimball. I saw him on a couple of more occasions on the job, they had brought him out of retirement to help with Epcot film.

Later, I found out that he was the man behind many classic Disney films like Pinocchio, and of course still later, I found out about his train collections big and small, in an article in CTT. I only wish that when I first met him, I had known who he was, and was at that time able to appreciate the great good fortune I had to shake the hand of Ward Kimball!

Hound --

Duly noted (with relief).

I'm using almost everything we put in our transcript.

I was honored to be invited to help with a train club tour of the "Grizzly Flats" in 2001. It turned out to be the last time Ward opened the place for a group. (I am a docent for the Carolwood Pacific Historical Society, and that's how I got the invitation.)

The Chloe was pulled out, and all the "backyard" buildings were open. Ward was there, looking very, very frail. It was explained he was just getting over pneumonia.

What was interesting was how vital he was-- he just loved the trains. I did take several photos, though not many of Ward. One of our members did take a lot of video, and I have a DVD of it.

Ward also came out to Walt's Barn in Griffith Park a couple of times. A friend asked what he should talk about if he got the chance to spend time with him. I told him that my understanding was that Ward Kimball was really rather tired of talking about Disney-- but that he loved to discuss trains.

Since my friend is a major Pacific Electric buff, he asked Ward if he'd ever taken the Mt. Lowe Scenic Railway. Well! My friend got a great, personal reminiscence from Ward about how he and his wife Betty missed the trip by ONE WEEK when heavy rains washed the railway out.

So I think Ward was swell guy... as do many, many others.
