Imagine if some other company buys Henson productions and wants to leverage it by talking to Universal. There are a ton of items that they could play havoc with Disney on when contracts expire. |

The Disney Studios has been a nasty quagmire of lame managers, lame decisions, and hence, lame product offerings, for the past several years. Other studios that are "loosely" associated with Disney, that still retain much of their independence (like Pixar, and Disney business units, such as Miramax) fair much better when left alone. I would hate to see Disney execs take over the day-to-day operations of Henson, and taint their magic with the misguided mindset that is currently poisoning Burbank.
I believe the joint venture between Henson and Disney for the upcoming "Country Bears" film is a sign of things to come. During the filming of the finale, we heard about Disney's interest in "franchising" the Country Bears into a film sequel, and possibly a TV show, like Henson's "Dinosaurs" a few years back.
Given the production cost of the bears alone, it would appear that some serious $$$ went into this movie. I doubt that Disney would put up this kind of investment for a "one-shot" family film that didn't have long-term franchise possibilities. And purchasing Henson Co. would definitely increase Disney's take from the franchise.

| Don Diego Fri 5/25/2001 1:04p | I would love to see it happen. Just as long as Disney doesn't pick the Muppets a part in greed and destroy them like many other things. Ex: Infoseek and Dream Quest Images. I know the Muppets are more established than that, and one would hope Jim Henson's assets will be treated with better respect than Walt's have been getting the last few years.
Think happy thoughts. |

I agree. They never should have dropped the ball on this back then.
Hope it works out. |
