I wonder if this is a prelude to a more dramatic shift in the leadership of the movie's storyline?

I can't help but feel the lost of Joe Ranft here. With no 'story team' that can identify the troubles and suggest fixes, I'm worried about both Disney and Pixars future films. There have been a few Director changes at both studios, all of them related to story issues.

Trust me, there are many Joe Ranfts. They're unsung heroes, and only rarely (like Bill Peet, etc.) do they get "sung" about.

But Disney has many great Story Artists. They simply need to cultivate a culture where they have their place again, like it was before screenwriters supplanted them almost entirely in the process.

Jim Hill over at Jim Hill Media - who, by the way, has some excellent articles up of late that people should check out - wrote me to question my having questioned his sources and his speculation on the trouble Rapunzel could be in. Can't blame him, as I'd do the same, frankly. At question is the speculation of a second director being ordered up by Lasseter as a result of the recent screening. I'm standing by my reporting, and I want to clarify for LP readers and listeners, and for my colleague Jim Hill, that I'm told that Dean Wellins arrival on "Rapunzel" is not related to the recent screening, nor was it ordered by Lasseter. I'm told that Glen Kean had wanted Dean on the project in some capacity but that Wellins was not avaiable. He'd been helpful during various stages of development, so when the shift in "American Dog" happened - which was prior to the "Rapunzel" screening - it allowed Keane an opportunity to ask Dean to join him on the "Rapunzel" story team. Dean asked for a larger role - equal directing responsibility alongside Glen. After some thought Keane approached Lasseter for his approval on this decision and got a thumbs up. I repeat that I'm told that this was not brought about because of the screening, and that Lasseter is, and has always been very happy with the progress of the film, with Keane, and with the rest of the team and the production and its artists are not under any cloud of doubt from the leadership of WDFA. I report what I'm told, and what I can confirm, so there's what I know

You know AFA, it's hard, but Glen is playing a more intelligent game than Chris Sanders.

ORDDU: Well, it would seem they have at least dropped 'unbraided' from the title--which gives a witch some hope. It's still too soon to tell whether or not this much anticipated film will be all that it should be. My sisters and I have always loved Glen Keane's work. But we're not familiar enough with Dean Wellins to offer any opinions about him one way or the other.
